HPH Hospice took wonderful care of my Mom. She was receiving in home care for about 7 weeks then stayed at the Hospice House for the final 2 weeks of her life. I slept on the couch in her room most of the time she was there. Everyone was knowledgeable and compassionate and our family is very grateful for them.

I'm not sure which branch of hospice we are currently involved with, however I'm sure things could be managed better. I have never had any problems with hospice here in land o lake until now. they assigned a nurse to a dying patient who was on vacation. how is it that you are supposed to wait for them to return.. then they have sent a different person out each time there has been a visit.. there is no consistency in the reports because each person sees something different. this patient is suffering and we still can't get her into a facility to rest. i'm not saying that they haven't supplied the proper medical equipment because they have. however its imposible to take care of a dying person all on your own. I'm not happy with this unit for the managing of this patient.

My husband was under HPH care for almost a year, during that time the VA paid them over $5,000 per month for his care. For the entire time, he saw the nurse, who was wonderful, one time per week. I visited with a pastor (4 different ones, which was annoying as each time I had to retell the same story) every month, and the PA (Also very good) every three weeks to a month. He saw the doctor once. A CNA (excellent) came in 2 days a week to help me get my husband bathed and ready in the mornings. The reason for the 2 stars: 1) their formulary is terrible. They can't get certain meds, their equipment is old, the supplies they send are cheap. 2) management is disorganized and penny pinching. For example, the CNA would have the day off and no one came to replace her, called HPH they had no idea she was out. happened frequently. Meds and supplies are only given 2 weeks (at most) at a time, because the patient may die and they don't want to waste supplies. their computer and communication systems are antiquated and the care workers in the field all complained about the inability to communicate properly with patient or easily input data for the patient. 3) after my husband transitioned to Peaceful Passages, as he was dying, I expected to see a nurse every day for him, but I did not ever see a nurse again. Morphine was delivered for his pain, but I administered it. The next nurse I saw was just after he died to pronounce his death and call the funeral home. 4) I never heard from them AGAIN! The second most important function of hospice is to care for the bereaved. I never got a call. Finally after three weeks I contacted my husband's nurse to tell her that I had not received a condolence call. I later got a call from the social worker apologizing and I was supposed to get a call from management afterwards and no one ever called me. For $5,000, per month, one would think more attention would be paid. If you have a choice of hospices, I strongly suggest you interview at least two and ask questions. I wish I had.
