Founded in 1908 by Sam Stein in Mississippi, Stein Mart was operated as a general merchandise store. After Sam died his son Jay Stein took the stores direction into discount clothing and was able to grow the store from 3 to 123 stores by 1996. The company is based out of Jacksonville Florida and I always get a very Florida vibe when I walk in here. You see a lot of tropical prints, jewel tones, and pastels in their clothes. Steinmart offers clothing for men, women, accessories, and a houseware department. Although they are similar to TJ Max and Marshall's in that they offer department store merchandise at a discount, Stein Mart stores seem to be a little pricier and nicer.if you haven't visited a Stein Mart yet you are running out of time. This is my farewell review. I found this one still open in Stuart but only for eight more days. Stein Mart was hit hard by Covid and they entered Chapter 11 before announcing they were closing all 279 stores nationwide. Everything that is left in the store is 60 to 70 percent off. They still have women's clothes, accessories, shoes, a few home goods, a lot of blankets, fixtures, mannequins, and some other odds and ends. It is sad to see a company with a history going back to 1908 going out of business. Another sign of the times.
