What an amazing experience we had at the Choctaw Lodge and Retreat. Six of us (three couples) spent the weekend and had a wonderful time. First of all, it is a beautiful location right on the river, with tall trees, a quiet setting, and beautifully decorated accommodations. The rooms are well equipped with everything you need to prepare and serve a meal. Little touches like a coffee maker WITH filters and WITH coffee, fire pits WITH firewood, gas grills WITH full propane tanks, made the weekend very enjoyable. The location is suitably remote, so we planned to cook our dinners and had a picnic lunch on the river. Well equipped full kitchens and full sized appliances made this very easy. Dining alfresco in the pavilion was just lovely. Breakfasts were served by the lodge and were ample and thoroughly delicious. As nice as the facilities were, the staff was over the top! Friendly, kind, helpful, great communication, and even helped out when we realized we had forgotten a few items by helping us get replacements. Abigail, Emily, and Elizabeth took excellent care of us during our visit, even supplying the kayaks, PFDs, and perfect weather for our 20 mile kayak trip down the Choctawhatchee. The only aspect of the entire weekend that wasn't perfect was that our hosts, Ron and Kathryn, were traveling out of the country at the time of our visit. They were very generous with their photo books of their previous adventures and we enjoyed reading about some of their travels, but we did miss meeting them in person and hearing some of their stories first hand. I guess we will just have to schedule another visit! Rooms: The rooms were well equipped with linens, towels, very comfortable beds, Nearby activities: The river is the main attraction here, and the location is remote enough that any other activities will require advance planning and transportation Food & drinks: The breakfasts are wonderful culinary events, but options for dining out locally are VERY limited. Plan ahead as it is several miles to the nearest market and further to a regular grocery store.
