On 2/18/2022 a project was negotiated with FR&SM for a scope of work in three parts 1. Install two solar tubes 2. Cover opening above front door. 3. Install skylight in covering. We were quoted $7200 for the work. We changed the size of the skylight in part 3, and were requoted $7500 While waiting for information on the solar tubes to be used, the 30 day validity of the offer expired and the project was postponed. Resuming the project after summer, we received a new offer from FR&SM on 10/20/2022 for exactly the same scope of work. The price was now 14,450. The quote was $3500 for part 1, and $10,950 for parts 2 and 3. No explanation was given for the increase in the price. We abandoned parts 2 and 3 immediately, but because of need and time constraints, accepted the offer for part 1. The work was completed most satisfactorily on 11/8/2022 by a subcontractor Solatube, who used the opportunity to provide training to FR&SM personnel on installing solar tubes. The result of the project part 1 is satisfactory. However, we note from googling, that a price of $700 to $1000 for the installation of a solar tube in Florida is regarded as normal, which compares unfavorably with the price of $3500 which we paid to FR&SM for the installation of the two tubes.
