The Greater Ward Chapel AME Church dates back to 1902 when the pioneers of the city opened the first church at 1st Avenue and 3rd Street. At the time Hallandale was a small farming community with a scattered population. The church was named after Bishop Thomas D. Ward and services were twice a month.
By 1958 the church membership had grown under the leadership of Reverend David A. Russell, Sr. and the congregation required a bigger church which was built here. Through the years thus church has served as a spiritual beacon in the community.
On March 17, 2002 Greater Ward Chapel celebrated its 100th anniversary. In 2010 the City of Hallandale installed a historical marker in front of the church. It is stop number 3 on the city historical trail. The marker honors all of the work the church has done in the Hallandale community through the years.
