Employee was rude and refused to provide assistance; they restrict access to the public from public offices unless you let them scan your ID and collect personal info. I was driven to city hall after an injury to get paperwork. Being that I was not driving, I did not have my wallet. When I walked in, the employee behind the desk looked up from her cell phone and said "ID". I politely explained to her I was instructed to go there to get paperwork (gave details) from a public office and did not have ID. She immediately stood up, walked around the desk to block my path. She said "all public acess is denied" and "you can not go to any public office unless you scan your ID. In a rude and condescending tone she said "since you drove here you MUST have your ID." I again explained I was driven to city hall by my boyfriend and did not have my wallet. She kept refusing me access and when I asked if she could phone the office and have it sent down, she refused. Meanwhile the private security gaurds were not at their table and nowhere to be seen. This is a two fold issue. First of all why are our tax dollars being wasted for a private security company if BOTH officers are not at their post? Also how are public offices/areas unaccessible to the public without ID? Must be nice to get paid on our dime and not have to work because people can't come in to get services they are entitled to. This is obviously against our constitutional rights. I'm not one to get on a soap box about stuff like this but this policy is obsurd and illegal. I was trying to pick up a copy of a report from the code enforcement office and was denied help and access to the code enforcement office (public area). To sum it all up, clerk and the MIA security office failed at customer service. City hall is a public building paid for by our tax dollars. It is illegal to require ID from a member of the public if they are preforming legal activities in a public place and not breaking any laws. This is opening up the county to a huge lawsuit. I urge the members of the public to speak up & get this illegal policy changed.
