This is our first year working with Foothills to file our income taxes, and we could not be happier. Laura has handled our return, and she has responded very quickly to our questions and other emails. I do not think that our return was completed more quickly when I did it or when any other preparer completed it for us. Foothills has proven to be a very professional, competent and efficient tax preparation service.

Our previous accountant retired and we decided to go with this local company. I was assigned to Laura Carter. My initial meeting and intake/overview was fine and she gave me helpful tips. Once I was advised that the return was finished, I started asking questions about their filing process and review, which I had sent via text on Sat evening (she had said I could text her anytime). I still had not received a response by the time I went Tuesday morning to pick up my return. When I went to pick it up, she didnt have my return and had left it at home. She then asked if there was a reason I was asking about reviewing the return and stated to me that shes pretty good at what she does. I told her - isnt it normal and standard practice for individuals to review their own tax returns before officially being filed, and that this is what my prior accountant has done but she hasnt explained their process to me. Rather than answering my question, I was met with defensiveness and hostility. This was further demonstrated when I said that I hadnt received a response to my text. She then snapped that I had texted her on the weekend (Sat evening). I was quite taken aback, and certainly didnt expect a response that evening or Sunday, but to not respond at all on Monday either when Im now there on Tuesday is beyond unprofessional. I told her that I never said nor had I questioned if she was good at her job. I further stated that I was simply asking about the process for reviewing my return, as this was my first time using their services. I also told her she had now made this personal, and that this was beyond unprofessional. I then had to return a different day to pick up my return, and upon review found basic errors. For one, I am an educator and there was no educator tax applied, and individual expenses/deductions were also missed from receipts given. What surprised me is how rude and unprofessional she was and openly so in front of both the owner (Hoffnagle) whose office is in the back as well as his wife (receptionist up front). His door was open and he overheard all this as did his wife, and neither acknowledged this and never said a thing nor followed up when I went to review it a second time after being fixed and pay the invoice for tax prep. I received no apology, no acknowledgment of the lack of professionalism, and was charged the full 375$. Anyone can make a mistake and that would have been understandable (albeit concerning given how basic), but this situation was compounded by her rudenesses and defensivenesses as well her lack of professionalism towards a client, which was out of line. I will not be returning, and I cannot in good faith recommend their services.

Business Response on Google Apr 2nd, 2023
Ms. Skoksberg, I am happy to address all your issues. First, I am always polite and never raise my voice to a client, even if a client is creating a scene. I am saddened that you will not be returning, as I am happy to go the extra mile to win you back as I previously stated in response to your Facebook posting on the New Hartford Chatter page.In reviewing both the texts and emails, I did apologize and I apologized the day you were here. I typically do not return texts to clients after business hours or on weekends and for you to think I should is very much unfair, as time off is crucial to us all. However, in looking back at the text records I did respond to you on Saturday but not on Sunday, the rest of the communication occurred in email or via phone. It is never a problem for clients to review their returns, in fact, we encourage it, as sometimes things are caught (I am not perfect, but am good at what I do). To have other people being involved just creates a more volatile situation and it is again unfair to think they should have been, as your issue was with me not them. Your return was professionally completed and e-filed, accepted by the IRS and the final product well within the range of a price point, considering it also included a business. I am again apologizing and wish you well.Laura
