There is a plethora of space for people to lounge and do homework and work. Why tear down the play area? There are already classrooms and a rock climbing area in the back. That play area is developmentally appropriate for those kids. Not everyone can abide to your minimal childcare hours during the day, this play area made the trip worth while. I wouldnt be surprised if you get a handful of complaints and membership cancellations.

Don't take away the play place for a public computer lab. Not fair to the members who pay a large amount to have a place to play for their kids. This is not a public library. Not safe for any of the members due to the increase in homelessness. If you want to provide a public computer lab, find another building or sponsor a library. AND if you are going to provide free services at all, it should be to help the public get moving. To increase health and wellness in the community.

Child care is fantastic but the gym equipment needs an update. Mostly I'm here to say we are disappointed you will be replacing the kid's play structure with a computer lab. No member I have spoken with is happy with this change. We all have smart phones and libraries have free computers. You already have 2 free computers in the lobby area that no one ever uses. It would be nice if you asked for the input of your members before making these kinds of choices. In response to your response: You raised membership rates significantly this year and are effectively downgrading the facility. That is what the public library is for. There are several of them in town. The choice to let vagrants wander in and out of a space right across from the daycare is irresponsible. And will you also be putting needle receptacles in the bathrooms? For "hygiene" of course. Also, if the age of the play structure is genuinely a concern, why then are you donating it to another nonprofit?

We appreciate you sharing your perspective on this. The room will not only be a space to work, but actually provide means and access to those who may not have a personal computer or reliable internet access. We value providing enriching activities for our younger members and to keep their safety as a top priority. The structure poses many hygiene issues that became a risk for the children who used it. The new computer space will help not only our younger members, but many generations with different classes, with proper screening/monitoring for members and the general public. Sometimes, hard decisions like this one have to be made, and not everyone will agree. We will continue to offer 2.5 hours of free childcare, and love having that option for members. We believe that to not be a minimal offering, but a great benefit of the Y.

Thank you for your concerns. However, due to the age of the structure, hygiene issues, and changing community needs, the decision has been made to remove and replace it. The new clubhouse will allow for members and non-members to access the Internet, which is limited or non-existent for many in the Southeast Community. Additionally, it will provide a place for students to do their homework, and for seniors to connect with loved ones. This new computer lab will be available to both members and non-members in the community. Our staff is trained on the importance of upholding our background check policy to protect the safety of our members. Thank you for reaching out with your concerns; I hope this helps clear up why this change is taking place.

We appreciate your concerns about the play area being taken down. However, due to the age of the structure, hygiene issues, and changing community needs, the decision has been made to remove and replace it. The new clubhouse will be more than a room of computers. It will allow members and non-members to access the Internet, which is limited or non-existent for many members in the Southeast Community. Additionally, it will provide a place for students to do their homework. It will be available for students during school breaks, summer breaks, and after school. It will provide seniors the ability to connect with family and friends, which helps against the isolation that some seniors experience. This will also be a learning lab for children and teens to learn how to create projects while working with technology. This new computer lab will be available to both members and non-members in the community; we will still run background checks on all community members coming in to use the lab to protect the safety of all our members. Thank you for reaching out with your concerns, I hope this helps clear up why this change is taking place. Please reach out if you have any other questions. Thank you.
