One of my favorites. You start off surrounded by forest, at about 8,500' elevation. Before long, you'll be able to see Caples Lake and the back side of Woods Lake. The trail ascends to the top of the tree line (roughly 9,100'), where you come to a large pond. It is on maps, but I didn't see a name for it. From there, the trail begins descending, bottoming out around 8,200'. In the next mile you will cross two streams that are the beginning of the Upper Truckee River, both of which were still flowing from fairly sizeable snow fields the fourth week of August, 2023. After about 2.5 miles, you will come to Meiss Meadow. The point listed on Google Maps (2.9 miles from the trailhead) is at a fork in the trail. You can turn right toward Round Lake or left toward Showers Lake and Little Round Top Peak. The trail is well-defined and easy to follow. The views were spectacular and constantly changing. Wildflowers were plentiful, with many still getting ready to bloom because of the huge and long-lasting snow pack this winter. There is a lot of shade on the beginning of this trail and the last mile, but it gets scarce as you climb to the top of the tree line. Given the altitude, keep in mind everything requires more energy and the sun is more intense. Plan accordingly. That said, you will be glad you took the time to see this one. Parking: Been here morning, afternoon, and evening. Only saw it full once. Fees: $5 day use fee, self-registration. No idea how often they check, but I have seen vehicles cited in the past. Restrooms: Vault toilets at one end of the lot. Dog-friendliness: Dogs are permitted. They are supposed to be on a leash, but I have seen some that weren't.
