image We recently bought a fixer-upper that hadn't been renovated since it was built in the '60s, so we enlisted SJB to help us modernize it. We tore down walls and fireplaces, replaced all the floors and fixtures, and even added a second floor with a killer master bathroom. Steve and his crew were phenomenal; the quality of work is fantastic and Steve was great at addressing any questions after we moved in. He was very knowledgeable and by-the-bookno cutting cornersso I'm confident our new home will be in good shape for years to come.

image I had work done on my house a few years ago when my house had flooded. My entire flooring/drywall/bathroom. From a recommendation I went with Steve - from my experience and letting their work speak for themselves I will never continue that recommendation to anyone I know looking for house work. If you're searching for someone to pay thousands of dollars to have quality work done on your house, keep looking this is not the company! 2 ft of drywall had to be removed and my entire flooring throughout the house. In some photos attached I've shared some of the crap work they did replacing the drywall and their way of 'replacing' the bottom half of a cabinet that had been cut up. There was always something that prolonged the project and always an excuse as to why something wasn't right or something was too expensive or whatever the case was. Since then I started having issues that I have contacted Steve multiple times about my flooring coming apart and he even stopped by once to check it out and just said it was happening because of how the house was built but others in my neighborhood with the same type of build have this flooring with no issues. His guy who did it just did a half ass job and didn't set it properly - when I had my backyard redone by other workers they took one look at Steve's work and said ya this isn't right. The other workers did the exact same flooring in my laundry room and so far nothing has chipped up like Steve's work. Steve said he would contact me for someone to stop by to patch some of the tile grooves and then never heard from him again. I did let him know that the job he did was totally unacceptable but what else can I do. I paid over $20k for this shit work and will be paying more to another contractor to fix it. I wish I felt great about the new work I paid to have done to my house but it's the complete opposite

image Steve is extremely professional and the quality of his work is amazing! The job was done within the timeline agreed upon and the results exceeded our expectations. He kept the work site clean as he progressed to the finished product and I will definitely hire him again.

image Steve and his team took our 80-year old home and brought new life to it. The integration from the old into the new is seamless. His knowledge of finished carpentry made all the difference. We had rooms and rooms of molding that couldn't be found anymore. Steve did lots of research for us and we came up with solutions that match so close you wouldn't know they were not built at the same time. We had to stay within the guidelines of the historical society and Steve's knowledge of those guidelines and made our home still look like it was built 80 years ago with upgrades of course. We couldn't have done it without him.Steve did a full house remodel for us and when we've added on porches and awnings he has come back out and made them look they came with the house originally. He stays on schedule, he has comprised his team with knowledgable professionals and tradespeople. We will definitely us SJB construction for our next remodel. Snyders - Point Loma

image A year ago I sought out a contractor to build a room addition. I found SJB Construction through Google searches and other research. 5 stars on Yelp, good BBB profile, I felt like I was making a good choice.
The day my project started was a foreshadowing of things to come. Steve had told me I wouldn't need to move out of my existing bedroom until " the last month ". The very first day, his crew began removing stucco from the side of my house and smashed my master bedroom window. They boarded that window up. Rains were in the forecast for the following couple of weeks and I had exposed insulation and walls, 30 feet worth. Steve said " that's just construction, it's fine ". My slab was poured, and the rains came. The rain pooled on the slab and made its way into two of my rooms, destroying my carpet. I spent 7 hours in the middle of the night cutting carpet back until it was dry and removing all of my belongings from my bedroom and family room. This is with my 3 small children living at the house. 3 months before we were supposed to have been out of these rooms. Every time a storm came I would beg and plead with Steve to help weatherproof the existing structure. I personally bought a a $250 50x50 tarp to cover the entire house. Steve put the tarp on - his freaking job - but he sure as heck wasn't going to provide any materials to protect my home. That was on me. From December 1 2018 until last night April 14th 2019 my wife and I have slept on air mattresses in my living room.
Things surely got better, right? No. Worse. Throughout every phase of the project I would notice poor workmanship. Industry standard practices not followed. Examples:
1. Windows. Steve's own crew - the same guys that framed the house - installed the windows. Usually a licensed window contractor would do this. If they see a problem, they tell the framing crew to fix it. Over half of my windows and doors do not operate smoothly. Over half are not level or plumb. My brand new master bedroom slider does not close properly, and its screen door cannot even enter the jam. I have picture of windows shoehorned into the rough opening where there is supposed to be a perimeter of space for settling. All in the installation manual. My daughters new window was installed so tightly it was bowed in the frame. Steve "fixed" this by sawing the sill down or something in a rush as the stucco guy came around the corner. Now the windowsill is uneven. My double hungs have to be forced down. No shims were used per instructions printed ON THE WINDOW. I can go on and on.
2. Drywall. Sloppy, horrible drywall returns around windows. Half an inch change in direction in various angles. Popped screws painted over throughout. Sloppy texture. In one instance, spray on orange peel texture was used over my existing knockdown textured wall. Attempts to match existing texture were awful. Good drywall guys can do this.
3. Floors. Why sub to a licensed flooring contractor when you can do it yourself? Steve's crew did the floors. I provided a highlighted, written set of manufacturers instructions. Multiple items were not adhered to and the floors came out horrible. LVP planks were slammed into drywall, pics attached. Why do the required 1/4" of spacing when you can just ram it into the drywall?? Why undercut jams when you can sloppily cut around them? Why put floor transitions under doors when you can just have 4" of carpet sticking out in the hallway? Steve angrily and disrespectfully called me a "layman" in my own home when I brought these concerns up. He told me "jobsite conditions" prevented him from doing the floors in the normal, standard trade way. I pulled up all the planks, hired a real contractor, and had the floors laid correctly with 0 issues. I paid $4,700 labor out of contract for this and had to buy an additional $1,600 worth of flooring since Steve's crew improperly cut and laid so many.
I have more to say but I exceeded Google's limit! Don't hire Steve - ever.
