This rating is to commend Ms. Wargo's spirit of community service.  Among other acts, Ms. Wargo donated significant amounts of time to Atchison Village Mutual Homes Corporation.  Unfortunately, it's my understanding (which has been understandably hard to verify during this period), that Ms. Wargo recently died.  If for any reason her office seems slow to respond, this may be why.  Good attorneys are rare - when you find one, know that their time is limited and valuable, and they cannot be easily replaced.

Was referred to Karen Wargo from the Nolo website...I thought that Nolo checked out these people before listing them in their Lawyer Directory but apparently not.   Karen supposedly specializes in estate planning and tax issues.  While she seemed like a nice enough person, her knowledge of tax issues relating to my relatively routine case were sorely lacking.  Frankly, I gleaned more info from the Nolo tax book than I did from her!  During my one hour consult (which I paid for) she spent way too much time going off-topic talking about old cases and stories which didn't apply to me.   I didn't get the impression she cared much about keeping up with tax law changes or was even interested in new clients for that matter.

Who among you rates lawyers among the more trustworthy of professions?  C'mon...be honest!  I was reading a Gallup poll of trusworthiness that rated nurses the highest with a score of 81% (out of 100%) and the lowest point shared by car salespeople and lobbyists at 7%.  Lawyers were somewhat better...marginally...at 17%.  So what if I told you I had found a trustworthy lawyer.  An oxymoron?  Not in Karen's case.Earlier this year I got the dreaded letter from the IRS.  They wanted to audit my small business.  Being the internet geek I am I Googled various web sites and read that the government was using more resources to inspect small businesses because it provides for quicker audits and a much better chance of finding something they can collect money for.  After all, the government feels they need more money!So I searched Yelp, LinkedIn and the internet in general.  I spoke to a couple of tax attorneys and just wasn't...certain.  Then I got some advice from the enemy.  Well, in my case a retired enemy.  An acquaintance who used to be an IRS auditor; in his case a very savvy and aggressive one.  He quickly recommended Karen.  He provided anecdote after anecdote about her skills and wins when dealing with the IRS.  So I called her up and met for the initial consultation.The first thing you get is that she is so very human.  Ok, I know we all are but she is not simply a persona in a suit trying to act all powerful or god like.  She listens well and took the time to explain why my business was being audited.  She explained the steps to the process, what she would do and the possible outcomes.  There is no pushiness about her and you feel that she is uniquely genuine.  I signed the documentation and the letter for Power of Attorney.It took a couple of months for her to deal with the various meetings and correspondence with the IRS auditor to go over my books, receipts and tax forms.  She kept me up to date and was always willing to explain the process each step of the way.  At no point did I feel she was simply trying to add to her billable hours or had anything than total respect for my business and my questions.So you have read this far and are waiting for the close.  The final result was decree of "no change" from the IRS.  In other words no extra money due to the government and case closed.  My IRS acquaintance said that statement is the best you can get in an audit.So in short (too late!) I am terribly happy with Karen and the outcome of my case.  In my mind she is perfect proverbial female David to deal the Goliath of the IRS.
