Visited in April 2015. A truly amazing and unique place that left me inspired. Bit of history: Leonard Knight, born on November 1, 1931, was the 4th of 6 children. After serving in the Korean War as a vehicle technician, he embarked on a remarkable artistic journey. Knights passion for spreading love and Gods message led him to create something truly extraordinary. In the 1970s, Knight painted GOD IS LOVE on a hot air balloon crafted from patchwork materials and a stove. When the balloon failed to take flight, Knight prayed and felt that Gods response was to build a mountain. By 1984, he discovered Slab City, a transient and retiree commune, where he decided to leave a small monument made of concrete and paint. Over the next five years, the project grew, and the current Salvation Mountain emerged. Leonard Knight passed away in 2014 but was able to visit his beloved creation one last time in May 2013.
