Pilots, I visited NorCal Approach a few years ago. Had to pre-apply for visit a few weeks early, background check for security. Traveled 90 minutes from Bay Area to Rancho Cordova. ID check at gate, then a Controller or Supervisor came out to escort me in and answer questions, and left me at a sector to sit behind a Controller. You just watch, no questions to a busy person doing their job. OK. Trouble is, after exactly 30 minutes, I got a tap on the shoulder. "Mr. Fleming, it's time to go...". What?! Yeah, what a gyp. I remember my early flight training days back in the late '80s at the old Bay Approach, and also Oakland Center. Seems like you could stay as long as you wanted, they called it "Operation Rain Check". Let's go see what ATC does on a lousy day for flying. That was all pre-9/11. The ATO is way different now...
