I am writing this review to give myself closure with respect to my time and experiences with this nonprofit company from the 3 years I worked there as a Therapist from 2014 to 2017. I will try to be objective as I write this review and dissect the inner workings of Personal Involvement Center (PIC) and trust that the reader will draw upon their own conclusions based on my observations and speaking with fellow colleagues who worked at PIC's different locales. All companies have a bottom line and thus revenue/profits are their driving motivators. What differentiates a company then is the culture in which you work in, not so much whether it's "for profit" versus "nonprofit" or the economic climate/unemployment rate at that moment in time. As a graduate level educated professional, one should have professional minimum standards on how they wish to be treated in a work environment. However, based on my own experiences as well as those of my fellow colleagues, here are some of the events that we have observed and have been enmeshed with: • Negative weekly Staff meetings - group meetings with Management on a weekly basis doesn't encourage input from employees. The meetings tend to be demoralizing and not much motivation or encouragement is given. The meetings consist of one sided conversations relegated to talking down to employees on what they are doing wrong. No opinions are solicited. • Tone of condescension and being spoken down to by management including by those aides and receptionists who work for them. • No coffee or hygiene soap or office supplies in some of PIC's office locations - we are "encouraged" to buy our own - some employees get their office supplies for free if they have the favor of management. Generally, allow a 5-10% personal budget to offset to cover these expenses and then itemize during the following tax year. Also, you will be using your own finances when you meet with clients out in the field and take them out to the occasional outings such as McDonalds, etc. You will be told to keep your receipts and that you will be reimbursed, but speaking with numerous colleagues, no such reimbursement ever occurs or is sporadic at best. • Professional lack of courtesy - management meets in private or offer no notice of their whereabouts during office hours as well not inform employees of any administrative changes until the very last moment asking you to adapt to a new situation on the fly. • Watch what you reveal about your financial status as that will serve as ammunition for management to come after you as they will take your financial dependency on your employment as an Achilles heel that they can utilize against you in terms of coercion and compliance. This caution is especially critical for those who only have a single source of income. • HR personnel can be condescending and rude. Be keen to the initial financial job offer given over the phone versus the actual written financial job offer as the numbers can differ. • This is a major point and the crux of why I am writing this review: Those who show any form of independence of thought or ask questions which management feels that you are out of line will get picked on and scape goated. To illustrate this point, we've had 11 employees leave on stress or "personal leave" from the 3 year period that I worked at PIC (that's a significant number for a nonprofit of this small size). Of those 11 employees, most left after finding another job. There is a punitive culture when offering suggestions to make improvements is considered a challenge to management's authority. We hope this review helps those considering Personal Involvement Center.
