Motor was broken out of the box. Shroud clamps sheared off. Rick sent new ones only after I put a sales guy on the spot at a trade show in front of several prospective customers. Good on him. However, it’s never fun to have to take a saw and drill your brand new motor that’s overpriced. Oh...and their clips still didn’t work. Then upon using it for the 10th time ever the propane line cracked at the custom two way fitting and luckily we caught it or could have caused serious injury to us or the boat. Seems like a consumer protection suit waiting to happen. LEHR has been responsive-ish to send parts, but who wants to spend several hours repairing something that is brand new and costs a significant premium to other options? You would think for the cost the design would be a bit more thoughtful, but after being forced to tear into this engine several times we spotted obvious design flaws that could be easily corrected. It appears to just be lazy or incompetent engineering. Or maybe they’re just riding the eco/green wave for profit until it burns out which appears to be soon because every local Seattle boat store has dropped them.

I own a second hand LEHR 5.0S short shaft propane motor. I have been happy with the hours and hours of service I have received out of the motor so far. It moves a 14 ft V Hull Jon boat along very well, exceeds 11 nautical miles per hour, when is it’s just me and the gear in the boat. My only real complaint is that with the little spot for a 1lb propane tank in the cowling, along with the little filler piece that goes in that area, makes it inconvenient to remove and replace cowling when priming for initial start up at the boat launch. This is minor and the benefit of having a spare 1lb in case of running dry in propane has not been necessary for my use. Other than that, the only improvement would be if they would get back to business and could start offering replacement parts if necessary. With proper care, there may never be the need for parts replacement. In response to anyone’s complaints... if there’s an issue, you just have to fix it just like any other machine you use in your lifetime. I had an issue with the motor dying when idling and in gear, I adjusted the needle valve in the carburetor and the idle adjustment on the outside of the carburetor and the issue was fixed in then 10 minutes it took me to do it. This is something that happens with all motors. We just forget this... now, everyone relys on computers to do it for them because of the use of modern fuel injection in automobiles.

I bought a Lehr 2.5 HP outboard in 2015. At first, everything was great, and service was available for the motor. Now in 2018-2019 I can't find any place to to get service, or even to buy parts. During my first two years of occasional use, there was only one problem - the connection between the small propane cylinder and the motor was fragile, and broke once. A service technician fixed it, but advised me to use an external propane tank, which I have done ever since. Last year the kill switch failed, preventing the motor from starting. My local outboard shop fixed it by replacing it with a switch from a different brand of outboard. That shop had been a Lehr service facility, but they now complain of not being able to get parts, or to contact Lehr at all. I have tried going through the web site, calling the 800 number, all to no avail. The web site says to call, then when I call the recorded message says to go to the web site. Their customer service used to be great, but now is non-existent. I am only giving it two stars because the motor itself was OK, and I hate the smell of gasoline. With the Lehr motor, I have no hesitation putting it in the trunk of the car, or sailing with it inside the sailboat. The motor itself is not the reason for my low rating, the service is the reason.

Update-i was able to finally get a response from customer service rep and they did send me a replacement fuel supply line at no cost, which was good. I want to be fair in my feedback so I thought it's appropriate to acknowledge their eventual effort in making things right. original post- Cheap product, terrible customer service. I bought a 2.5 hp engine from them and it had a leaking fuel line after one season of usage. I understand that all mechanical things can break so that's not a problem. I figured I'll get a replacement part and it will be done....not so fast. i called and emailed LEHR multiple times and nobody has ever answered the phone, returned my voice messages or emails. This is absolutely insane. Now I have an $1100 piece of scrap metal sitting in my garage with no way of fixing it. If you want to be good to environment, start recycling, take shorter showers, etc., but don't buy this junk product from this bad company.
