While we are in California, we are renting a home and the heater went out. Of course its an old house so there was asbestos. The house owner hired this company to come and remove the asbestos up in the attic. Edwin Chavarria (24 yrs with this company)was absolutely outstanding! He was very polite, told me right away how long it would take, and he and his partner did a very good job cleaning up. He told us he does his job in every house like it was a family member. My wife was so impressed, she gave both of them some of her homemade chocolate chip cookies. When the air conditioning company came back to put in the new air ducts, they said nothing about their still being asbestos in the attic. That leads me to believe they did their job. My wife and I were very surprised reading some of the other reviews because our experience was very pleasant.

I made the big mistake of trusting Andy McGee at P.W. Stephens in spite of the numerous bad reviews. There are reasons for bad reviews, stay away from this company! After I received my contract from him, I had 4 questions that weren't covered well, if at all, in the contract. One of the major questions was why does my contract state 2 days work vs. the 5-7 days he quoted me. I also asked for the contract to be changed to show the number of days they felt it would take, all the way to worst case scenario. In other words, the work will take anywhere from 5-14 days, depending on the amount of moisture in the wood. Easy, right? He got a little pissy and pretty defensive over that. He didn't like my asking how long for worst case scenario! I have to pay to stay at a hotel while they take care of this and I'm not supposed to ask what is the longest I'll be out of my own home? He refused to change the contract. Against my better judgement, I proceeded anyway. I signed the contract and later that day, he texted me saying he wanted to be up front with me, they require a 50% deposit up front. I kind of freaked over that, we argued a bit and he told me I had been a demanding customer. Why is that? Because you asked how long it would take to get the work done (wth?), what was worst case scenario and you don't want to give me 1/2 up front before I start the job!! BTW, the contract stated all payment due on completion of job. I told him I was willing to give him 10% and he asked me how do I even know you have the money to pay me when the job is over? We always do this and nobody ever complains he stated. Seriously!! (And nobody ever asks how long the job will take, either, right?) I can't remember everything he said, but he was trying to intimidate me into moving forward without adequate knowledge of scope of work, implying that I was being an unreasonable woman. I since found out he has a complaint filed against him with the State Contractor's Board for being unprofessional. Also, I was told it is illegal to ask for more than a 10% deposit or $1K deposit, whichever is larger. I also since found out that their remediation was faulty as listed in the contract, they weren't handling the asbestos correctly. If you read through the reviews, that is a common theme....asbestos problems. Just don't use them and if you do, be very careful. Andy McGee was a very charming guy until he's pressed, then the venom came out. Never in writing, however, only on the phone. Interesting. I did call the owner to discuss with him because I didn't know if he was aware Andy was requiring a 50% deposit up front and he never returned my call.
