I went to both the MDR and South Bay locations collectively for several years. The facility itself is great, the people are top notch, and it's definitely an excellent place to work out. Having said all that, I am writing a negative review because their accommodations for childcare are limited and, most importantly, they rely on shady, archaic contract terms to lock people into memberships with them, even if they don't want them or can no longer effectively use them. MDR closed down their Kids Club during the pandemic and it never returned. South Bay's Kids Club is still open, but the hours are largely incompatible with working parents, with the exception of Saturday from 8-12, which tends to fill up very quickly and cost an additional $20/visit. You need to book Kids Club in advance through the app, but it often reaches capacity OR the app occasionally bugs out and doesn't let you reserve even when there is capacity, resulting in multiple visits to the gym only to be turned away due to insufficient capacity. Since my membership with Equinox used to be through a partner (GymPass), my tenure with the gym didn't count towards their "introductory period," meaning that when their partnership with GymPass ended and I needed to go through them directly, I was required to maintain my membership with them for another year, regardless of whether or not I had the ability or desire to use that membership more than a couple times per month. Due to only being able to make it over to the gym 1-2x/mo, I attempted to cancel my membership. I explained to them that I had been with Equinox for several years, enjoyed going there, but wasn't able to make use of my membership beyond the 1-2x/mo, so it didn't make sense to continue paying $200+/mo for a membership I couldn't use. They told me, sorry, you still have to maintain membership for another 4 months because we have a 1 year contract on you, no exceptions. My previous tenure with Equinox through GymPass didn't count for anything--they had a contract that locked me in, so they were determined to enforce it on technicality, with zero goodwill towards me despite my history with them. I even experienced an injury after a HIIT class with them that set me back about 3 weeks of non-usage after injury to my ankle but didn't think to pause my membership for medical reasons--I was a member and that's giving goodwill to the business to not try to take advantage the second something isn't working. I would have hoped they would extend the same type of courtesy and goodwill in return. Equinox is great if you both want to use it and can make use of it--as I mentioned, they have great equipment, some excellent classes, and the steam room is excellent. However if they think it's good business to force people to pay them in excess of $200/mo when they aren't even using their membership, they lost my respect and I no longer consider renewing with them if/when my circumstances change and I'd be able to go back. Equinox--you're right, you got a contract on me stipulating that you have me and my significant other trapped to keep paying you guys $200+/mo each for a remainder of $1,600 total between the two of us for service after the date we asked to cancel--you can take our money, but we are not coming back after this treatment. Equinox--if you want to make my money, it should be in exchange for use of your service. If you have to leverage contract terms that force me to commit my money to you even if I no longer want the service, that's no way to do business in 2024, and I will not forget this. I am writing this so that if you plan to join up with Equinox, while it's a great place to work out, be aware you will be subject to shady dinosaur-era contract terms they use to trap people into paying them money that they frankly didn't earn.
