I went to an open house for an apartment and I verbally went through my not-so-great credit with the owner. He seemed more than fine with it. I was still encouraged to pay $50 and apply anyway. When my credit report came back, my score was actually higher than I anticipated (651), but information was coming back from 4 years ago. They had asked for records up to 3 years ago on the application, all which I provided. I went through a bad divorce 4 years ago. The owner's wife (the other half of this company) went back and forth with me in a few emails and had me explain in detail the information that came back, primarily mailing address discrepancies during my divorce. That's why properties also ask for rental information--which I did provide and my previous landlords verified. It was a degrading experience to have to divulge information like that when it was older than their required background anyway. That's the exact reason you verify someone's rental history with their landlords, to see if they lived where they say, when they say. She also asked for full bank statements, to review every single page and transaction. In my 20 years renting apartments, I've never had to let someone view my entire bank records. I've always just submitted bank summaries and pay stubs. It was an extremely invasive and uncomfortable experience, although brief. In the end they offered me a lease if I could get a cosigner who makes my rent plus their own. After I just went through and explained how difficult it was to start life over by myself. Laughable. Then when I turned them down they denied my application "due to my credit report." If it was due to my credit report, you could have denied me 3 emails ago and spared me the personal trauma of having to share with a perfect stranger my expired and irrelevant marital status. I know every application is not a guarantee, but they had everything they needed on my credit report to deny me anyway *before* they pried into my life. It really felt like they just didn't like the story behind the person after the fact. Otherwise, why ask for the story.

Awful communication. I tried to rent studio from them and supplied all the needed paperwork, yet they still denied the application. They say its because they cant verify my information, yet I provided multiple bank statements and pay stubs. I wasted a week when they could have just told me they would deny my application. Ive never had issues with getting approved for an apartment before but its nothing but a headache with these people.
