CA House is such a great organization for the Davis community. The leadership is really intentional about making the community a place where students feel welcomed and at home. It can be very complicated and challenging to meet the needs of so many different kinds of students but the staff at CA House have gone above and beyond to do just that. I’ve met great tenants, been a part of Wednesday night dinners, and joined for community activities. I would 100% recommend living here.

Avoid living here at all costs. they have begun adding authoritarian rules here (forcing people to do stuff, and using a blanket excuse as "intentional community."

CA House is an excellent organization! I'm happy to have lived there for the two years there before graduating. I have the utmost respect for the Director, Sara, and the friendly staff. I would definitely live there again if I could and recommend others who are interested in seeking out an intentional living community to look here. Also, the food is always delicious!

I know it's getting towards the season of looking towards a new place to live. I'd like to share my past experience from living in this location, that will hopefully dissuade you from living here. Learning about the staff turnover in recent years has been good, yet some of it's less than pleasant members continue holding leadership positions at CA house, Namely Joseph Archer, who holds a treasurer position. Knowing this how can this community continue upholding positive values and morals with such a horrible human being in its board. This is my truth. And, how this moralistic community ousted me by force. I had called into attention California tenant/landlord laws they were violating. How it was illegal for them to do maintenance without a 24 hour notice (if it was not emergent) and how giving sudden spur of the moment tours to random strangers in our townhouse was illegal (which became awkward when we had just gotten out of the shower). I demonstrated my rights as a renter and they slammed a notice to evict in my face. They illegally increased the amount of my rent, and threatened to call the police and court action on me, if I paid my previous rental amount. They threatened to me with legal action if I "overstayed" or refused to pay the full amount. And, for what, for expressing my rights as a renter. They refused me access to my renter's contract, even withholding the right to access a secondary copy of that agreement. I vacated because this had already become such a traumatizing experience. Imagine a young college student going through all that with the added pressures of school. For my own well being, I decided to leave. I had every right to stay but I was done with the threats by Joseph Archer and I needed peace. Joseph Archer continued being a menace, by verbally harassing me and spouting swear words, even towards the end when I had emptied out the room. As I was exiting he told me I wouldn't get any of my security deposit back and to forget about that money. I had left my room in the exact conditions it was given to me and had taken the time to clean. So, to get a mailed description of all the security deposit deductions and how they had to replace the carpet because I had illegally possessed a dog in my room was utter nonsense. I explicitly told staff that I never possessed an animal in my room nor had any desire as I am allergic to pets (lab tests and all to prove my point). They had returned a previous housemate's security deposit in full after he had left his room an utter disaster. He had left urine on bathroom floor and had not cleaned his bathroom once since his move in two years ago. Additionally, he had left a large stain in the carpet. They had to bring in a team to clean up this housemate's mess for TWO DAYS. And, they still secured their security deposit in FULL. I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone. And, I would strongly discourage any individual from looking into this place as their next place of residence. There are plenty of places in Davis that are more affordable and less of a hassle to live in. Trust me you don't want to do Wednesday night dinners, you'll be cooking for 30 plus people once or twice a quarter. But most importantly, I would urge individuals to not associate with this 'non profit organization/church.' If they allow racist bigots like Joseph Archer, they clearly do not have minority individuals interests in mind. CA House says they care about their residents and this community, if they cared would they give this treatment to an individual? Getting at the cusp of it all, they really cared about their rental profit margin and renting out units. Why do you think they have frequent advertisements on Facebook and the Community Housing Listing page?
