Hikari Sushi & Omakase

Hikari Sushi and Omakase is better than many of the "name" sushi places in SF and LA and worth the drive from anywhere. I am a huge fan of authentic Japanese cuisine and this delightful little restaurant would be at home on the best streets of Kyoto or Tokyo! Wonderful wonderful sushi. Always fresh and delicious. Each fish hand-chosen by the owner. Your meal is prepared in front of you with a description of what each delicacy is. It's more than worth the price. The quality is top-notch, the fish immaculately fresh, the atmosphere cozy, and the flavor perfect. Also try their saki pairings. I have been back four times and so grateful to have such a wonderful gem in Davis! *Please note this is an authentic Omakase restaurant. They only serve top quality sushi and sashimi dishes. They do not have the mayonnaise stuffed rolls, salads, and teriyaki dishes you find masquerading as Japanese cuisine at so many other places. What they do have is THE BEST SUSHI I've ever had in Northern California. First time doing an Omakase. It was a great experience. I love hearing the explanation of every dish, not only do you eat great food, you walk out with a lot of knowledge. The whole staff is very friendly and attentive. Lots of Sake choices.

My husband and I lived in Davis for a few years and when this intimate, niche omakse sushi restaurant opened, our lives changed. As fairly seasoned foodies and harsh critiques of sushi, this is (and I mean it) the best sushi in California that we have had. And we now live in San Francisco. The chef, his wife and his entire team are incredible. They source only the best fish from Japan, but also prioritize local businesses and regional sustainable ingredients. We are awed and floored every time we visit by their ingenuity and creativity, while paying respect to the fish and honoring the proper aging process. If you think youve had sushi, you havent. Hats off.
