        This was a crazy morning. Stop to relax and have a meal when the owner was screaming at the waitress and speaking to her like she was a dog. Screaming at the top of his lungs how customers are not right. It was an unbelievable experience watching the entire restaurant sit quite and stun. I left the restaurant because I would never support a business that feels the way he do about customers or just the fact he so disrespectful to his workers. The waitress look afraid so I know this is a regular routine. The silverware was dirty and the wait time was unacceptable. Bad business and never again. Thanks for nothing and for the waitress get help and dont let anyone treat you like that.

        Is it a new thing or I am unaware that 20% tip is already included in the check regardless how satisfied you are eventually with food service etc. They give it fancy term (20% homemade graduate e and living wage fee) I call it extortion. Not going again.

        The Southern style collards were delicious! Who knew? I ordered the 2 egg breakfast and the side were the collards which I didn't expect at this cafe. I have been to the South (La. and Ms.) and asked how this cafe happened to have collards. Then he told me about the beignets! Can't wait to try them! The waiter was very attentive to my questions about the collards and the beignets and it turned out the collards are vegan too. I had a very delicious meal there yesterday and I highly recommend this cafe. Such a pleasant surprise to find collards and beignets on the menu!

Whatever we don’t make in-house, we source from other local companies. When we can’t make it Homemade, we do the next best thing — buy homegrown and support East Bay businesses!The Homemade Cafe was opened in 1979 when previous owners Norm and Janet trekked cross country to pursue their dreams of opening a local diner in sunny California. In 35 years we’ve grown, laughed, and cried with our neighborhood friends while carrying out our single mission – serving great food. In 2011, Norm and Janet sold the restaurant to long time employee Collin.Having grown up a Berkeley kid, Collin grew up eating at Homemade and eventually got his first job as a busboy at the cafe. After learning how the ropes by working in every position from dishwasher to kitchen manager (and a brief hiatus at NYU) Collin is active in all day to day activities and is committed to the restaurant and the neighborhood.
