Did I ever pick the right painters when I hired Steve Gray and crew! I interviewed and got bids from several area painters winnowed down from Yelp, Nextdoor, and Google. One of them was a stucco company that had done a great job on our home a couple of decades ago and my wife and I figured he was a shoe-in. When he arrived, he explained that contrary to what people said on Nextdoor, he did not do painting but recommended Steve Gray. He said Steve is the one painter he always recommends. In fact, I learned later that Steve painted HIS house. Steve was very thorough in looking at our home which includes a guest house in the rear as well as a large game room and garage, all done in stucco. Steve explained that his estimate was for labor only and I would pay for paint and materials off the store invoices he would supply to me. His discount for the expensive Sherman-Williams paint was stunning and we paid about half-price of the retail cost we would have paid if we bought the paint ourselves. His bid for labor was neither highest nor lowest but I had the confidence in what he told me needed to be done that we hired him immediately. He was booked up about two months in the future but we set a date that day. He was much more thorough in his explanation about what he was going to do than any other painter I spoke with. Some of those who come out to look at the house are just estimators and have to run quickly to the give the next estimate. Steve is the one who shows up. Steve works with his brother Glenn, his son James, and two other painters there for three days. On the finish day, day four, it was just Steve and Glenn to finish off the little detail work and do the front door, which was to be a different color. They power washed everything (even our rain gutter which he was not painting to make the whole job look nicer), patched a lot of stucco where it was damaged, sanded unsightly stucco areas, and painted. Incidentally, I had no idea they could restore the look of stucco to the original look until I ventured outside and saw it for myself. They trenched around all landscaped areas to paint below the dirt level so none of the old color stucco would be seen. Steve put two coats of grey paint on using both an air sprayer and then backrolling. The last two feet under the (different color) eaves were rolled with small roller by hand to make sure there was no grey paint on the white eaves. We had trim already painted recently but they repainted areas where masking tape pulled a bit of paint off the trim and them some where there was some weathering. Steve explained that he just wanted the whole house to look nice and there was no upcharge. Besides Steve doing much of the work himself, I watched him constantly walk around the house where the four others were digging, patching, and painting, pointing out any small spots they might have missed. I heard all this from the inside of the house as they worked. There was no doubt in my mind that he was fully in charge and honestly believe he went above and beyond to make sure I had an A-1 paint job. 5 painters, 4 days. Services: Door painting, Exterior painting
