Food and drink quality and selection has been average since the switch to Hill Coffee from Au Bon Pain. I can understand Chartwells reasoning for not wanting to pay for the Au Bon Pain license (same with the former Einsteins in Walker), but the food/drink quality and selection was much better before the switch. Still good service and environment.

I like the Devils Den. It is really good with the salt. This place gets crowded but there is more space since people spill over into the union and the outside. The punch cards allow regulars to try the different drinks on the menu without much risk.

I frequent this coffee shop quite often. The ambiance and food are generally great, but I am deeply frustrated with the consistent misgendering I experience here, which has compelled me to leave this review. Nearly every time I've visited, staff members have consistently referred to me, and others, by outdated honorifics such as "sir" or "ma'am" which don't match my expression nor name. Not only this, but they've also written down the opposite gender counterpart of my name even after I clearly state it. This is not only careless but deeply disrespectful and offensive. In a society as diverse as ours, it is essential to understand and acknowledge that not everyone finds being called "sir" or "ma'am" to be a sign of respect. It is an unsettling throwback to historic England and American Slavery. This seemingly small detail can have a profound impact on customers like me who do not identify or feel comfortable with these traditional honorifics. This routine misgendering creates an uncomfortable environment and subjects me to unnecessary anxiety, which should not be the case in a setting as common and casual as a coffee shop where people go to relax. It's especially disheartening given that this coffee shop is one of the few open places on campus during the summer. This leaves me with limited choices and the feeling of being forced to tolerate disrespectful treatment just to eat. I urge the Chartwells and Hill Coffee management to provide sensitivity training for their staff on understanding and using appropriate gender-neutral language, and to implement practices that promote inclusivity. Misgendering is not a small issue to those it affects. It's a matter of basic respect and acknowledgement of our identities. I hope this review leads to significant changes in how customers are treated at this coffee shop. I look forward to being able to give a better rating in the future based on the respect and consideration shown to all customers.
