Dr. Sherman has been awesome at diagnosing and explaining said diagnosiss to ease our concerns about eye surgery. Two cornea transplants, and two cataract surgeries later my husband is enjoying amazing results. The whole team at this facility has been wonderful.

After my appointment, I asked what the refraction charge was as I had never been charged out-of-pocket for it before and no one alerted me to this. For future reference to patients, a separate out-of-pocket fee for refraction is $55. I discovered refraction is now not covered under most insurance unless it part of the follow-up after surgery. Refraction is the part of the exam when patients are asked to look through different lenses while reading a series of small letters and then asked which lens is better. So, the eye doctor who performs this service during the exam will issue two separate bills: one for the eye exam and one for the refraction forcing patients to pay out-of-pocket. The practice of charging separately for refraction results in higher out-of-pocket expenses for patients. For patients with good vision who do not require glasses or contacts, it may be possible to avoid the refraction fee by simply declining the service. A doctor's office can tell you prior to the exam whether he/she charges separately for refraction, and can be done through a standard notice that patients are required to sign when they arrive at the office. While your doctor may truly believe that refraction is the best way to detect vision loss, a standard eye exam should include several other tests specifically designed to detect vision problems and eye disease such as tests for glaucoma, etc. Patients who can see well without contacts or glasses should feel comfortable politely declining refraction as an unnecessary service, particularly if it requires an extra fee.

I was hesitant about about anyone touching my eyes but everyone really relaxed me with friendly, knowledgeable answers and treatment. The professional and well organized facilities did not waste any time in completing my procedure. This helped me so much to relax and recover. I felt like they cared about me, especially when the Docter and nurses both followed up with phone calls checking on my status. Thank you to everyone. Brad Nelson
