My husband attended cottonwood & while they have a great program and wonderful therapies the co-ed mixture here is ridiculous. He told me stories that sounded like a teenage summer camp. With several relationships among patients & staff encouraging this, there needs to be a line drawn. The people who come here are sick & need rehabilitation, but flings that distract them from their sobriety & goals arent okay. I think its a good facility with good therapies but the after hour activities are not encouraging anything but untrustworthy behavior.

I was very nervous showing up here. My mental heath was at the breaking point, but I had heard great things about this place. Sadly they are far from it. What Cottonwood doesnt tell you up front, unless you can self pay for 30 days or how every many days , they dont know how long you will be able to stay. Its all up to insurance although when you sign the agreement (in my case) it was 30 days. I was led to believe there was no issue. They had all my insurance information and again, I was lead to believe they did their due diligence for me. The nursing staff was amazing from the moment I did my intake and recognized that I was there for mental health and did not belong is detox. Kudos to Jill for advocating for me and getting me into a room with a wonderful roommate. As I showed up on a Friday they didnt have a schedule made for me and I was to work off the Master Schedule. This wasnt awful, I had some options to choose from and started to make my way. I did feel a little lost. From the moment I got there it was obvious they were short staffed. They will tell you that is not the case, but that is an out right lie. I got to meet my primary therapist, Taylor Monday morning in primary group. And she is very kind and caring, but new to this place. Lets fast forward to when everything changed. I was called into the business office at the end of their business day and told my insurance hadnt been approved and they were gracing me day that they would cover (monetarily). But that I shouldnt worry, this is the process, insurance companies play a game. They had an appeal in with my insurance. Julie said she felt terrible and would wake up thinking about me at 2am since at this point I was in tears. I told them I ca not self pay and that if I had to leave then I would. Again, I could not pay out of pocket. I was in a tail spin. I called my parents and support people and then thought to myself, why not advocate for myself. I called my insurance company and they let me know that Cottonwood had not filed an appeal for me. My insurance company let me know that the last time they had heard from Cottonwood was March 21. At this point it was March 26. I was also informed that the person handling my case on the insurance side was out of town but the person I talk to escalated my concerns to the top. I called the next morning at 6:30 AM and had my concern escalated again. What I did find out from my insurance company was that Cottonwood was not contacting them with updates on my treatment. I was left in limbo for a full 24 hours before finding out that cottonwood did not appeal. My insurance is decision but that I could not self-pay I would need to leave. Granted they wanted me to stay the night so I could coin out and say people. The miscommunication that took place for me and my situation, is unfortunately, their status quo. My primary therapist had called me into her office told me I should not have never found out about the insurance stuff the way that I had. I told her I agreed, and I told her that people were not being truthful with me. The nursing staff and the therapist they are truly amazing. The techs that work there are understaffed and asked a lot of. But it became so painfully obvious that this place was being run by people who are more interested in money and not patient outcomes. The world of mental health is a broken system and when I came to Cottonwood I had huge hopes. I was left with the carpet pulled out from under my feet, lied to and not only felt disappointed but disrespected . I say shame on your Cottonwood.

Cottonwood saved my life. The therapists, staff, and programming here is simply outstanding. Tiffany the counselor, BD the nurse, Elwood, Tom N, George, and many others had such a positive impact on me. If you are struggling with addiction, mental health, or both- Cottonwood is the place to go. The only reason Cottonwood fell short of five stars was due to a seemingly recent shift to a money centered mentality. Several times during my stay, activities were cancelled or closed due to staffing shortages, facilities clearly showing age, and several folks who were clearly not safe were permitted to be patients at the facility and even invited back to campus after stealing from patients and streaking across the lawn. At some point, leadership began prioritizing profit over people, but this is not reflective of the staff and counselors you interact with day-to-day.
