image I see so many nasty comments about this place and i think people fail to realize that its a shelter and never going to be perfect.. i have been in the umom program twice and i see the changes they made in a positive way.. i got selected for rapid rehousing program at umom for the second time which Im not proud of but my case worker named Shawna was probably the best case worker i ever had.. that lady made sure me and my kids were safe in the shelter and out once i got my apartment.. she was very blunt at times but i took it as her personality but did everything she told me she was going to do and more.. if they had more case workers like that Im sure it would impact ppls live so much better.. she is God sent and i just want to thank Umom for having someone like that on my side.. if you do what your suppose to do in the shelter you dont have any problems. They not perfect but they care!!

image Dec6th - UPDATE
While although things have certainly had quite a rocky start since having arrived last week, I am raising my review to 3 stars. The staff I have come into contact with have been really quite helpful and accommodating. It can be extremely frustrating that even never having been in trouble with the law, I'm being treated like I'm on probation (12a-5a curfew, sign in and out each time - including just walking to the front curb to get something from your vehicle or pick up something you've ordered, not allowed to have visitors, having random room searches, etc). Granted, them being federally funded and having some pretty questionable characters entering the program, I can understand the reasoning behind their rules/restrictions. And I mean, they're providing me with a free room with a bathroom, running water, meals.. The least that can be done on my end, is to try and abide by their requests.
Giving respect and thankfulness, gets ya a long way. Just sayin'.

I'm a single mother of a total care, special needs toddler. My daughter was kicked out of daycare due to her disability, I was fired from my job because there are literally no affordable centers that offer care for special needs children her age, and my ex stole $8000+ from me, leaving us homeless. All in the span of maybe two months.
I attempted to contact UMOM for help and was told that since I didn't have a job (even given the circumstances regarding), I could only be helped once my daughter was accepted with Social Security for her disability, or I became established with Family Housing Hub. After months of just trying to get ahold of someone with FHH I was finally contacted back, only to be argued with and told I should "just live with my parents". I have been waiting for over five months to get someone with Social Security assigned to my daughter's case, and that's just to start the determination as to whether she even qualifies or not. After explaining all this to UMOM, I was told I still couldn't be helped.
I get that resources are quite sparse, but my child receives feeding, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, doesn't walk or speak, and has a handful of specialty equipment due to her disability. The lack of access to resources is absolutely baffling.
Almost a year later, I'm finally getting help with emergency housing this week. Mind you, this is only happening because my daughter's orthotist has another client whose parent works with a police department that receives vouchers. Fingers crossed things start looking up.

image I see that my review has been deleted. Did you use donations to pay for that???
Me and my kids stayed here and while I was there my confidentiality was compromised. They let drug users leave their kids on property to go get high a block away. Food was constantly making my kids sick. Found out we were being poisoned by fellow residents. One night my daughter vomited and the sitter asked for assistance with donated linen and was told , " She is gonna have to stay like that." Like I said before they do not exhibit the core values they list for their donation sites.
I had a staff member have an ignorant outburst because I asked why she was looking at me aggressively. She starts threatening me. Asking me who I thought I was. A human being love. If only empathy could be taught. When I made grievances, they were swept under the rug. I asked to meet with anybody in charge and all requests were ignored. They did however speed up my move out and with held beds for my kids that we needed as retaliation. One manager said they wouldn't fix any issues because they sympathized with the staff having to work in the shelter with minimal pay. SMH..Oh and not to mention the case manager busting in mid meeting with it's okay I'm in charge. They don't respect the homeless no matter your circumstance. If you have no choice keep to yourself and don't expect much professional behavior here.
