Hi Rob, thanks for your feedback! As far as some insight on the brake component situation; Yes it is generally true that on most modern vehicles, pads and rotors should be replaced together. There are a few reasons, one is that over time manufacturers have made rotors thinner to save weight and gain efficiency, so they don't have the same amount of excess mass and heat dissipation ability that rotors of the past did. Another reason is that the rotor and pad materials have to mate, or bed in, to eachother to achieve the bite for the property braking force the car is intended to have. Putting new pads on an old rotor surface will often create hot spots and not allow this to happen. This is where rotor machining comes into play. Machine the rotor surface allows new pads to be seated onto them, however many cars have rotors of a relatively thin specification, to where once material is removed, then can no longer shed the heat necessary, leaving the possibility of warping or overheating, neither of which will give you the longevity that we want to provide you with.
