The newest director has done her dead-level best to make Our Place true to its mission statement. Unfortunately, there are no mental health professionals who drop by regularly enough to really evaluate whether those attending are truly in the process of ** recovering from ** mental illness.
I believe some who've been with the organization as founders and volunteers for years (13?) are not as interested in helping others as they are in playing a parental role to them (something a previous director with mental health therapeutic credentials actually pointed out to me), which is not only unuseful but impedes the quality and pace of true recovery. They seem to favor gossip and use more discipline than encouragement at this point.
And I know certain folks are not treated as fairly as others. Favoritism is a problem. Visiting once a week is enough. If you have a loved one who could use the social interaction, it's my advice to bring them one day a week only; otherwise it can end up being more of an impediment, sadly, at this point, than a help. This has been my personal experience and is only my opinion. I am a consumer myself and care deeply about those who suffer from mental illness.
Others and I have tried to effect positive changes only to be met by intransigence by those who think they are always right. A general waste of tax dollars for an organization that runs five days a week, in my opinion.

Excellent place with an exceptional amount of potential too!!! I love it here at Our Place. It would be wonderful to see how Our Place can be improved and for a few more people to come here. Theres room for a few more people!!! Over all, truly a blessing and a gift that Our Place is to residents and the community. So thank you so much to the staff,volunteers and employees for making it great for us. Thank you Huntsville!!!
