I feel so sorry for renters!  We reentered the rental market after thirty years due to lack of homes when we moved back to Birmingham.  We found a townhouse that was a good value, clean and great landlord (owner).  However I tore my MCL and couldn't use the stairs. It was a three level townhouse.They have a horrible lease break policy, which is fine but given it was an accessibility issue, should have been a little more lenient.  I know I could take them to court due to Hud laws  requiring mobility access for tenants but it wasn't worth it so paid the thousands of dollars needed to break the lease.  It is what it is.  Here's where the biggest issue lies.  Getting back the security deposit!  I've put three kids through college and dealt with some sketchy landlords/apts.  Every single one of those we received our security deposit within 30 days, usually two weeks.  I would have expected better from a rental management company that rents out nicer homes.  Nope, after a few weeks we were told they have 60 days to give us our money back but they were working on it.  A week goes by, check in again... another week....  finally we get a "it's in the mail".  It's now two weeks and still no check.  Yes, post offices are taking longer but there's no way a check is taking two weeks to go five miles!  I'm hoping they will cut another check that we can pick up.  I'm not holding my breath!Again, I feel sorry for renters for having to deal with this kind of crap.  We're fortunate that our realtor found us a house and no longer have to rent!  My guess is most renters could really use their security deposit to help with expenses yet Walton and Tower sit on their money for almost two months!  Shameful!
