Maybe CCC is for you; It isn't for me or my family. That became clear on two occasions. First, I served as a missionary for four years with CCC as my base. Several individual members missed us, but the institution and most of its staff seemed to forget us and move on. Out of sight, out of mind. Never did the corporation support us in any way. Second, when my family returned and my marriage was in peril, nobody in any official capacity reached out to support me or, more importantly, my children. Never has anyone been curious enough to check on the welfare of my daughters. Not a priority. The Elder Board functions more like a Board of Directors than shepherds of a flock. They are effective lawyers and businessman adept at paying debts and managing budgets. Yet, only one Elder has expressed concern and love for me as I became the Respondent in an adversarial divorce action. I stopped attending a few months ago. It's like I was never there. My name was simply deleted from the Church Directory. No resources have been offered to my children during this difficult episode. Without reservation, several involved members are amazing, loving Christian servants! However, pastoral care and intimate, personal attention to the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of members are weaknesses of this organization. Artie is a good preacher and I'm sure there are some people like the loud, modern ("dynamic") KLOVE-style music in worship. I left feeling empty and irrelevant. What was lacking for me and for others I know who have left CCC is sincere CONNECTION. Active involvement in the lives of members is not a priority of the institution. My father often complained that almost no one would speak to him there. He could come and go to a Sunday worship and maybe speak to half a dozen people, and rarely were any of those people on staff or in leadership. (He and my mother now attend Merrick Drive church of Christ where they have been overwhelmed with their warmth and grace.) It's just not what CCC does as a company. CCC is witty, clever, and smart, but also cold, distant and often unfriendly. This may not be your experience, but it was mine and my parents'. My parents also stopped attending CCC several weeks ago and nobody ever has said a word to them or checked on them, except one truly Christlike woman. CCC is a church in search of a clearer focus of its purpose and calling. Perhaps it should begin by caring for its members. It may be trying to do its best, but many others have stopped attending in the last few years... and, sadly, nobody calls.
