My child attended Excel beginning at 3 years old and graduated from Kindergarten. Excel's educational program is excellent, using a child's natural tendencies of repetition and routine to reinforce learning. Reading and mathematics are stressed there, giving your child an unparalleled edge when entering school later. Writing and cursive, spelling and general studies round out their program using the A BEKA and Hooked on Phonics programs. I saw children leaving Excel for first and second grades with fourth to eighth grade reading levels, I've seen Excel 5-year olds working on simple algebraic equations, I've seen Excel children skipping grades and placing in High Ability/Gifted programs. This school did not limit children to the classroom canon, children who could work ahead were encouraged to. My child and another surpassed their standard high expectations and were eventually taught a more advanced curriculum by the director while the regular teacher worked with their class. Homework is expected of Excel students, and unfinished homework will be completed during the child's recess or naptime. Students come from differing socioeconomic backgrounds, I would assume that the high percentage of Excel students are recipients of assistance programs. No matter the child's background, they are taught at their level and expectations are high. High staff turnover does affect their very consistent academic program, and the out-of-classroom experience does give me pause. As with any daycare situation, I strongly encourage parents to keep an open dialogue with your child regarding day-to-day experiences. I would encourage any Excel parent to immediately bring all concerns to the teachers, Director, or agency rather than discount your child's feelings or reports. Ensure that your child's support system of family and friends are listed and updated on your child's record so that trusted persons are able to stop in and say hello, take your child to lunch, pick them up, help with homework, etc. Be mindful of your child's menu and be prepared to provide substitutions. Discipline may or may not be much harsher than in your home, please understand Excel's policies and procedures, do not hesitate to question any action. Excel can be a positive experience for your child if you are actively involved, I believe their academic preparation to be second to none!
