Nice guy, friendly, but the whole inspection didn’t take more than 5 minutes. Didn’t seem detail oriented. He had to drill a hole in the wall to check for insulation and said, “I’ll plug it and you’ll barely tell it was there”, but never patched the 2 inch hole he drilled.

DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! My first home 5 yrs ago and realtor recommended him. He missed so many things saying house is perfect with nothing to worry about, he assumed a lot of things so I am sure if he does not do any inspection, just prob looked around. It was red flag when he marked my foundation as concrete when it was wood. Had to replace roof right away. There's two large holes in the garage ceiling that he did not even mentioned. We gave him a bad review at the time and he became angry and called us fraud trying to get an inspection for free because we wanted a refund. I am glad others feel the same as I knew he did not do a good job. He's been doing it for a long time and got complacent is my guess, not enough attention to detail as required by an inspector.

We would definitely not recommend Homeplace inspections. We used Don for our first home several years ago because our realtor recommended him. He missed many things that should have been pointed out. We've since had an inspection on that home and several homes we've owned thereafter by a different company. If the home inspector does not allow you to follow along during the inspection, that should be a RED FLAG. No pictures were provided or detailed notes on what was covered during his inspection. Only a brief printed report which lacked much information and a verbal 20 minute recap when he was finished. There are much better companies that provide a comprehensive and detailed inspection while allowing you tag along and ask questions.

DO NOT USE HomePlace Inspections / Don Doty!!
His egregious error on my home inspection will cost me $20-30,000. I have a major water intrusion issue. I was naïve and put my trust in Don Doty thinking he would perform his job and act as a professional. He did neither in so many ways and has many reasons why his lack of finding and reporting the problem is everyone else’s fault. The short phone call I had with him to explain the problem ended with him hanging up on me and not returning any of my or my realtor’s calls. I contacted the MN Attorney General and Doty lied in his response to them. He said in his statement that “there were no signs of water damage” and that I was “Demanding money” (this is what I could get out of it as there were very few full sentences in the page long letter). I’ve had four licensed general contractors and a City Inspector say the problem has been happening for several years and the visual indication of it (that Doty missed) was not new since Doty performed his inspection. He blatantly missed it and will not take responsibility for it. I did not “Demand money” from him. I called and was expecting a discussion of opening a claim with his insurance. The City Inspector and two other inspectors indicated that an insurance claim should be an easy step to remedy the problem. I highly doubt HomePlace Inspections carries insurance!! His inspection report consisted of several times copied pages with “hen scratched” remarks and check boxes and no photos of the few obvious issues he did report. As he did not want me or my Realtor present at the inspection, I feel he doesn’t want it known how lacking his work is. When I did meet with him, he spent more time touting himself than he spent on talking about the home. There was no walk through other than indicating where the electrical panel was and into the utility room to explain the furnace, water valves, etc.
His incompetence, unprofessionalism and unethical business behavior should make all RUN AWAY FAST from HomePlace Inspections and Don Doty!! (The very least, ask for insurance information!).
