After being billed for a surgery last year, I received a bill from Houston Surgical Assistant Services, Inc. They said they were out of network and they were billing me for what the insurance company did not pay. Fair enough. However, they did mention I should appeal with my insurance company. When I called my insurance they said to ask if they had conducted a peer-to-peer review to appeal. I called Houston Surgical back and attempted to speak with the insurance specialist named Sonja. In the first five minutes of the phone call she was patronizing and obviously wasn't going to listen to anything I had to say. I told her I was more than willing to work something out and pay them but that I wanted to try everything we could first with the insurance company as I have thus far paid out over $12,000. Sonja talked over me, accused ME of being the rude one, and then said there was nothing else she was going to do. Horrible way to talk to people on the phone. Before speaking with this woman, I had every intention of working something out with these folks. It's not their fault the doctor didn't consider them as being out of network. But at this point, after speaking with Sonja, I refuse to do one thing more. They can send it to collections and get nothing as far as I'm concerned, just out of principal.
