image Overall, our experience with Box Painting was positive. However, there were some areas that could be improved, which I'll do my best to summarize. But first, the positives. The finished product looks good, and the paint seems to have been applied well, which is obviously first and foremost. Ben was very friendly and easy to work with, and I give him kudos for answering a lot of questions that I had as we worked through the process of picking a company to use (we had bids from three). The Box invoice was also very detailed, organized, and easy to read, and the crew was very friendly.
As for the other side of the coin, I'll start with some issues around communication. We thought some areas had dry rot, and we had been told by Ben that we didn't need to have a carpenter out to fix them ahead of time (as other contractors had requested) because Box would handle it all on their own. When the job was complete, and nothing had been done with all but one spot, we were confused. Ben came out and said the crew hadn't identified the other spots as having dry rot, which I'm hoping is accurate. Communication with the crew (Julio, Fernando, and Mario) was sometimes difficult as well, since they didn't speak English super well. We never saw Christian during the actual process. He came over with Ben once, before painting had started, but never again. One example is that the crew told me they were running out of paint, and suggested I go get more, or maybe give them money to do so. Like a number of other times, I found myself having to reach out to Ben to let him know what was going on, and then he would apparently follow up with the crew, because things would change (they went and bought more paint).
Ben had me tag along as he tested for lead paint, and said that because there was lead (as expected; the house was built in 1930), they would be hand-scrubbing the flaking siding, rather than power washing. However, the crew power washed the entire house and did not scrub anything. They also did not put down any tarps or clean up after this, leaving lots of chips all over. I spent that evening literally wet washing our back patio and driveway to prevent the dogs and neighborhood kids from potentially being exposed to lead paint chips. When I called this to Ben's attention, he did ask the crew to clean some of it up, but the most important spots had already beencleaned by me. Ben also said that the crew would do a thorough cleanup at the end of the job, including vacuuming chips off the ground. They did clean up some (though not great; I'm still finding painters tape around the house), but no vacuum was ever used.
Lastly, the crew left tape marks on one of our vehicles. When they painted near the driveway, they covered the vehicles with plastic, taped on with painter's tape. I had offered to move both vehicles to the street, which would've been very easy, but they said it was fine. I should've insisted. When I washed our truck after this, I noticed water beading up in a weird way along the door, and realized it was in the shape of a long strip, which is where the tape had been applied (it shouldhave been taped underneath). Then, because of the residue left behind, dust and dirt would collect on that spot, until eventually I cleaned it more thoroughly. Not a big deal, but easily avoided.
I would definitely still recommend working with Box. As mentioned, we are pleased with the finished product, and everyone was nice and respectful throughout. I just hope that some of the points made above are taken into consideration as ways to improve the process going forward, particularly those related to the safe handling of lead paint. Perhaps these things arent happening very often, since most reviews are clearly very positive, but I do think my concerns are valid.

image Ben and his crew from Box Painting took very good care of us and our house! Ben explained the process they would follow and gave us great input when choosing our colors. When it came time to prep before painting his crew was very prompt and courteous, answering questions we had and pointing out a repair we needed on the siding. Ben walked us through after the painting was done and pointed out a couple minor areas that he had his crew touch up the same day. We are very happy with the finished product, enjoyed working with Ben, and and would highly recommend Box Painting!
