Buncombe Creek Golf Course is my new definition of a hidden gem. From value to playability to course health to staff, everything about my experience at this course far exceeded my modest expectations of a nine-hole course in the middle of farmland.
Solo, I played the nine-hole course twice for $30 in three hours. I'm currently a high handicap and thoroughly enjoyed this course.
As it was my first visit, I wasn't sure what to expect. The only time that proved disadvantageous was the opening hole, which I tripled after skulling a pitch over the green. Only after I finished the hole did I see that Hole 1 is also Handicap 1. So don't let that deceptively hard opening hole deter you from enjoying this course.
Particular highlights for me were the downhill par 3 third hole, the dogleg right par 4 fifth hole (cutting that dogleg is fun and worth the risk), and the long par 5 seventh that has a sharp dogleg right at the end.
The seventh hole is a doozy, with a narrow landing area for your driver. I played driver the first time I played the hole and lost my ball just a bit to the left. On my second time around, I hit a hybrid which didn't go all that far—but it did go straight. Then I (surprisingly) hit my hybrid a couple of more times and very nearly made par on a hole that I tripled on my first attempt.
Oh, and splitting your drive between the two trees on the ninth fairway is an enjoyable way to finish your round.
There's a reason this course is ranked so well here—because you get much more than what you pay for.
P.S. The welcoming dogs are awesome!

The course has been through some excellent improvements.
The greens are 75% better, the holes have been opened up, as to where not every shot off the fairway proves to be catastrophic.
Playable yet Challenging.
