Wow, what a joke. I attended the 7:15pm hot vinyasa class taught by Sharron and I was very disappointed. I left the class feeling frustrated, discouraged, and like I didn't even get a good workout.
I have been practicing yoga for about three years now (I have dabbled in bikram, power, hatha, and vinyasa) and I have never attended a class with such poor direction from an instructor before. (let me note quickly that this studio is very nice! it has a shower, sauna, and dressing rooms, but the actual yoga space is small, cramped and barely heated by two space heaters in the back, yeah that's right. Space heaters.)
We moved through the beginning poses very quickly, which was nice I thought the class was finally going to pick up some pace, but then the instruction stopped so we could go into "free flow". Everyone in the class looked pretty confused, going about their own speeds, legs bent in triangle and shaking from lack of balance, and instead of directing us she bounced around the room shouting about transfiguration, and caterpillars coming out of their cocoons. There was about 25 minutes of this "free flow"
I am familiar with the basic poses, just not the order she was having us do them in so after a while I got confused. I did manage to stop in the middle of class to tell her that I was lost and at first she told me to follow the girl next to me (however she was way more advanced than me!) Finally she did help me, but kept directing me to bind with my big toe in triangle, which would cause me to be hunched over, she thought this was good. Also, she would have us do a pose on one side, but not on the other side!! For anyone who knows anything about yoga knows that this is completely wrong!
I'm glad that the first class is free, or I would have asked for my money back. If I'm going to pay upwards of $19 for a yoga class, I am paying for the instruction! Not to stand in a room for an hour and fifteen minutes that is heated up to maybe 80 degrees by two space heaters.
I did manage to speak with Sharron after class about my dissatisfaction of the class, and she basically told me that it's just because I am "a beginner" that I was confused. This is unacceptable. I am not a beginner, and even beginners should not be treated like this.
In my opinion, the Center For Yoga's hot vinyasa class is trying to be both meditative and a workout, and is desperately failing at both.
I will not be going there again.
