image i cant tell you how horrible this company is to deal with, but i will share with you how they have been so unbelievably horrible i have been out of work with a massive medical problem and have to have at home nurses and doctors they think i can run right back to work now im out of money and they are still dragging there feet 3 weeks it took them to send one thing for my doctors to do and now im still waiting. DO NOT use unum. i asked questions and all i get is the same response in a different tone they are pathetic and dont care about the people they should be helping.

image If youre going to take out a temporary disability policy here offered thru your employer - DONT.
They change policy rules constantly, and when you call they try to get very smooth. They lie.
Our policy states Up too One Thousand Dollars Weekly but theyre paying us SEVEN DOLLARS A WEEK, stating that were also collecting disability from NJ. Havent seen a dime from NJ and UNUM has sent us multiple letters, of which - each letter says something different.
A formal complaint has been filed with Consumer Affairs of NJ along with the BBB.
I suggest you keep a paper trail, because they will scam their way out of paying you.

image UNUM is a scam. I told them they're a scam over the phone. UNUM replied by saying it's my company's fault that UNUM didn't do their job. Read more below. UNUM specialist claimed to have contacted my doctor for medical records and blamed the doctor for not replying. My doctor said UNUM never contacted them. UNUM representative said specialist had the wrong fax number the whole time. How?? Who's number did they previously have then??UNUM will change the story and details of the process to purposely confuse customers or lie to change the situation to something more convenient for them. I've caught this and they apologized and said this new thing they're telling me is the correct detail. Every time I call, their story never stays the same. UNUM claimed they contacted me multiple times but could not tell me the dates. They just kept saying they have an activity record of everything to try to scare me but failed to tell me any dates of any activity. They control the activity log. They can fabricate/edit the activity log all they want, but my phone company and email company records aren't going to lie. UNUM specialist told me that whatever his/her decision is on benefits is final. So it's basically a monarchy where one person with no medical background can make all the decisions. The specialist said if they "feel" I'm not disabled enough based on what they read, then I'm not eligible for benefits. So their company is making a medical decision on someone's disability status based on the UNUM specialist's "feelings" (and the specialist doesn't have a medical degree). It's illegal to make a medical conclusion without a medical license.The UNUM specialist also said they don't want to give too much money out because the government will pay us disability benefits so there's no reason to give us much more on top of that. Yes, that's what was told to me.For 4 weeks, UNUM ignored all my voicemails for an update and waited until it was time to close the claim so they can pocket all my company's money and never have to give out benefits. I told UNUM over the phone they are a scam because they just wait until a claim is old enough to close it out so they don't have to pay benefits. UNUM replied and TOLD ME THIS IS ALL MY COMPANY'S FAULT BECAUSE MY COMPANY TOLD THEM TO DO EXACTLY THAT and they were just following instructions. When I said I don't believe my company told UNUM to attempt to contact my doctor once, give up after one attempt, and then ignore me for 4 weeks, UNUM had nothing to say.Looking online, there was a lawsuit against UNUM and UNUM lost. "Ex-Dickstein Shapiro Lawyer Wins Fees in Unum Disability Lawsuit" (Jan 2023)"A federal judge Tuesday granted class-action status to a lawsuit that contends Unum Group, the nation's largest disability insurer, schemed to deny or terminate claims of thousands of disabled Americans." (Can't find the date on that article)Several attorney/legal websites also state that they can help you fight against UNUM (not just any company, UNUM specifically).Edit: UNUM fabricated the activity log. My account activity says they called me today and that I called them back. These calls never happened. I have phone records showing this is false.

image Cant begin to explain how much I would not recommend this company. My fianc took paternity leave for the birth of our daughter. He did not receive pay during the two weeks he took off. It has been a month and a half since the leave started, and we still have yet to receive pay. The customer service is atrocious. Trying to speak with someone over the phone is absolutely ridiculous. It is to the point that our kids are going without Christmas because we havent received the pay that he was supposed to have received over a month ago. Dont get me started with the bills that are now past due. And then they mailed the check to the incorrect address and that is going to take almost another week to two weeks to process another payment. I would never recommend this company to anyone. If there was an option to do less than 1 star I would.

image I had a policy through my employer.  This was six years ago. My wife passed away, the hr department submitted the paperwork in a timely fashion . I have copies. I no longer work for the company , I was forced to retire for health reasons. One of these reasons was a life threatening stroke. Actually had 2 strokes, discovered the first incident when the second major stroke caused me to be hospitalized. this plus other health crises caused by wife's death contributed a very long recovery period. Finally in June I found the paperwork that confirmed this.  Since then I  have received the royal run around. they denied the claim twice saying I didn't supply all the requested information, in fact the last item they said they needed I sent four times. I even saved the email confirmations each time for proof. Also spend countless hours on the phone, and would not be allowed to speak with supervision, for different unsupported reasons. The reps were very congenial and pleasant, but that doesn't provide results. So at  this point  I would give negative stars if I could.
