image I hired Home Instead-Palos Hts to provide caregiver services week of 9/12/23 for my dying Father. I needed 24 hrs of care scheduled as 3 -8 hr days. I spoke with Jasmine who said the fee was $34 per hr. The in-home appt a day later with Tricia was ok until she disclosed that they required a $1,650 deposit before starting. I was stunned since this was never mentioned on the phone. The only reason I wrote the check was because I was desperate since my Dad was coming home with hospice the next day. It was deceptive considering my total bill should be $816 for the week why would they need double that amount for a deposit? It took almost 4 wks & several calls after my Dad's death to get my refund. They also add an additional charge of $150 for non-refundable administrative fees which was disclosed in the contract during the meeting but Jasmine never mentioned it on the phone either. I had only one request to Tricia that these caregivers must know the proper safe way to change bedding with a bed ridden patient in the bed. Tricia assured me they were very skilled but this was 100% false. Neither of the two caregivers had a clue and one admitted immediately to having no experience in this skill. It resulted in unsafe conditions for the patient and the task was not performed at all or not adequately enough. I chose to not make any further issue because I needed peace in my Dad's final days. The week after my Dad's death I contacted Tricia and informed her in detail of the experience I had with both caregivers. I spoke about them not having the only skill I requested and the problem it caused. She lied and insisted they had the skill. Not true! I even offered to test them in my home with her present. The first caregiver already admitted the truth. They had only been shown a video of how to do it. As I told Tricia a video isn't enough for that type of skill. Due to them having the lack of skill for the critical task, I requested that we be compensated for the issue and they waive the $150 administrative fee. Almost four weeks later the refund check arrives minus the admin fee. I guess they concluded that it was ok to lie and deliberately provide unskilled caregivers despite knowing the patient needed more. I did try to discuss this with the owner back then but neither owner was willing to return my call. I would never ever use Home Instead again or recommend them. They were deceptive and untrustworthy.
Edited above for space and added to below for my response to owner. I acknowledge making one mistake in my review. My initial call was with Jasmine not Tricia. Everything else in my review is 100% accurate. Your lies are disgusting. There was never any confusion on my Dad's prognosis period. We knew he probably wouldn't last even a week and that is what I told your staff period. I requested 24 hours of care from you for that week. THAT'S IT. I didn't request a recurring schedule or want one and told your GM Tricia that. Therefore the total fee was $816 in full. No need to ask for $1650 but you required it anyway. If I had been told that in the initial phone call the appt wouldn't have been made. Furthermore, taking almost 4 weeks to refund money that shouldn't have been charged in the first place shows your complete disregard for clients especially in consideration of the financial burdens that funerals may bring. Your office staff trainer was only in my home for less than 30 min the first day and she was present when your caretaker announced she never changed a bed with a patient in it. She also came by for 5 min on day 2 to make sure the other caregiver showed up. She provided no real services. Neither care giver possessed the only skill I requested and had to have. Your administration services were a failure. You didn't deliver the service I paid for so it is completely reasonable and appropriate for me to request you waive it. Bizarre how you are questioning my decision to wait until after my Father died to discuss this with you? He only lived 7 days and I wasn't about to miss a minute of it arguing with you.

Lisa, I am sincerely sorry for your loss and equally sorry that you were unhappy with the service that we provided you. I tried to contact you with both text and voice mail, but I haven’t heard back from you. I apologize for speaking so directly here, but you have called our reputation into question, and I feel I must set the record straight on some of your comments. Please know that I am not discounting your concerns, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss these with you. • Tricia (my GM) did not speak to you on the phone when you first contacted us. You spoke to Jasmine and stated that “Per Christ hospital, you didn’t know if he had weeks or months to live”. This is important because we set up a recurring schedule for your father. • As we didn’t know that you only needed three days of service, because you stated on the phone that you didn’t know whether it was weeks or months, the standard two-week service deposit for a recurring schedule applied.• The admin fee is clearly stated in the service agreement which you and your mother were given a copy of at the time of the in-home consultation. This states very clearly that we collect a service deposit that is 100% refundable minus the $150.00 admin fee. These two distinct parts require initials to verify that you are aware of these details. And they were explained at the time of the consultation. Your mother initialed these parts and signed the agreement of services.• In the 3 days of service, we had an office staff trainer at your home on two of the days to assist the Care Pro’s. Home Instead Care Professionals are renowned in the industry for compassion, dependability and skill, which come from an extensive training and screening process.• When you called one week later and conveyed your concerns, we asked why you didn’t tell us at the time, and you stated you didn’t want to get anyone in trouble. We work very hard to correct all the problems that we have and that we know about.We are very proud of our reputation and for 23 years we have strived to provide the best care possible with the highest level of training for our Care Professionals.
