#1 The building is relatively hold, with no renovations. Thus, their are loud radiators throughout the entire year, walls that crack due to water leakage, a loud toilet (with a public toilet handle on it) and occasional roaches crawling around the home. Additionally, windows are hard to open (really unsure why).
- I simply had to get used to the loud noises of the radiators and toilet, but had to put down roach repellent to ensure I never saw roaches. As far as the cracked walls, maintenance "repaired" the walls 3 times. After the 3rd time, I noticed that the cracking of the wall had stopped.
#2 The building appeared to have a piping issue. On the first floor of our building walls could be seen breaking down from water leakage, and a first floor neighbor experienced a ceiling collapse right in front of his door from excessive water leakage
- The ceiling was repaired, but barely. The new ceiling tile could be seen having water leakage as well.
#3 Getting maintenance to come to the building and fix things is an easy process, as you can simply put in requests via your resident portal on their website. However, there is no permanent, one landlord or house manager to report to, and if you try to report to who is assigned to-your building they give you the run around. Problems don't seem to be addressed necessarily, just covered up. (i.e. water leakage to the ceilings and walls).
#4 The area of the building is perfect if you enjoy the park, lake, and local stores/restaurants. Everything is literally within walking distance. Thus, if you don't have a car, this may be the perfect location in terms of accessibility.
- I enjoyed walking over to the lake and walking to the grocery store or local movie theater (Harper Theater).
#5 Security of the building is sub par. Every resident receives a special key that unlocks the back and front door. There is a buzz system that allows you to answer calls of people who want to come in. However, I have had situations with package companies where someone was able to sign for my package, and take my items, even when initially noted that only I was allowed to sign for the package. Additionally, packages just sit in the hallway or near resident doors.
- While this isn't necessarily the fault of the apartment company, sending packages to their main office (nearby) should be suggested since packages can just sit out in this apartment building.
#6 If you have a car, parking is available right in the back of the apartment.
- Just inquire about a potential open space. During my stay I paid $125 a month for parking, which isn't bad for apartments more Northeast of Chicago.
- Unfortunately, having company will be hard if multiple people drive because parking on the public street is hard to find. I used to have to park in spaces for company in order to save a parking spot. So parking for more than one car in the area is poor.
#7 The company does have friendly faces.
I particularly enjoyed conversation of the front desk receptionist at their main building. There was a young man there who made me feel at home and welcome with his fun personality and great conversation. Additionally, Ms. Ruth Hamilton, who helped me retrieve my mail from the building after my lease expired, was very helpful toward the end of my lease, assuring my leave was less stressful than it could've been. These experiences reinforced my want to stay in the building, even when I was ready to leave before my lease was up.
For the bad things mentioned, it irritated me most because of the amount you pay for the apartment. It just seems like the experience should be better and you should get what you pay for, but it doesn't feel that way. I did not extend my lease after the one year, but I met people who have lived in the building for years.
Overall, I give this building option of Mac Apartments a 3 out of 5 because of speedy and accessible maintenance, affordable parking, and accessibility to a plethora of resources!
