Epic ohana is such an amazing organization. They save families in crisis. They saved my family. The reason many families are forced to separate is because when one parent becomes depressed or mentally ill - if there is any safety concern for the children, the family may be forced to separate unless the mentally ill person takes the initiative to move mountains and heal. I reached out to so many help lines, crisis lines, hospitals, therapists, clinicians when my husband became depressed. No was was able to help because no organization has the time and resources. Healing takes a tremendous amount of time and resources - two things that our overwhelmed legal/cps system just does not have. One doctor at castle medical center literally told me that because my mentally ill husband was hospitalized two times - and it did not translate into ongoing outpatient care, that he was no longer going to allocate their resources towards my husband (because inpatient beds are expensive) and that I may have to make it a legal matter -have him arrested in order for the legal system to force treatments on him. I was horrified. As a successful proactive problem solving solution oriented person - I felt like there should have been some way to help my husband. People that have never been through this dont realize how far the system falls short when it comes to families going through hard times - law enforcement cant help you, your doctor cant help you, not even cps can help you. You are expected to kick your mentally ill spouse out or be deemed a negligent parent. Imagine being asked to kick out your grandma with dementia because she was threatening family members - I was at a complete loss. Its criminal that there are no resources to do more for prevention before situations reach this stage of crisis.
Epic accepted our case. Came to our house for eight hours of intensive counseling a week. (He was too depressed to have gone himself - he is the primary caretaker of our children because I have to work to support our home - and was have minimal family support) it was what my husband needed - hes on the right path to recovery and our family is once again eating dinner together each night, going to the beach together and going to church each Sunday.
Without them, my family would not be together today. Thank you epic ohana for your compassion and hard work. You guys are really life heroes. Words cannot express my gratitude.
