Long version:
After downsizing, we moved into an apartment while looking for a home in Atlanta. We stored 40 years of family memorabilia and a few heirloom pieces of furniture in a popular, nationally-known, storage facility. We thought a short time in an indoor, climate-controlled, 4-story building would provide ample protection. Three years later we went to collect our treasures. As we lifted the door to our storage unit, we saw a 5-gallon bucket perched under the ceiling of our top floor 10x10. When we spoke to the manager about it, she said, Oh, that. We had a small roof leak, but it was repaired several times. I hope theres no damage. There was damage - $12,000 worth of delaminated, mold-ridden water damage on the furniture. Worse than that, 40 years of family photos, our childrens awards, journals, music, treasured art creations, and my husbands love letters were fused together into a brown, hardened mass. Water stains etched the concrete floor where the puddles had lingered. The manager apologized profusely, saying it was her fault. I asked why she didnt contact us after discovering the first leak - maybe we could have saved something. She had no answer. The district manager apologized, too, claiming this was a rare occurrence in their company. Their multi-billion dollar company. We requested a refund of our rent. They denied it and offered us free, new boxes to repack instead. Repack what? Most everything was destroyed. I spent the next several months peeling apart photographs, but nothing could be saved. For months and months I left messages with the regional manager and national customer service center requesting a mere rental refund for their failed service; but their initial empathy had dissolved. They claimed there was nothing they could do.
Too weary to confront this Goliath in small claims court, I called Jim Jenkins upon a friends recommendation. After listening sincerely to my sad saga, he crafted a well-worded letter demanding a full refund of our rent and sent it to the decision-making players. He handled the unkind volleys that ensued; and, finally, they surrendered. We received the check for our rent just weeks ago.
This money wont replace what we lost, but at least we didnt pay this awful company to destroy our memories. I know this behemoth would never have refunded our money without Jims intervention. His kind counsel, proven expertise and sincere empathy helped us heal from this painful loss. Ultimately, it was all just stuff, but it was special stuff. Jim took some of the sting out of losing it. We will definitely call him for all of our future legal needs. You should, too.
