This could be more of testament to State Farm more than Barry, who is a very nice guy, but to me, there's no difference in this situation. I obtained renters insurance from State Farm, I spoke with an agent and purchased the policy in full. Two months later a substantial amount of mold was found in the unit and my roommate and I were advised not to live there - I was getting sick and didn't know why. After speaking with Barry to find out what my policy covers, he indicated that the only way to know would be to put through a claim, which he did for me. When I heard back from the adjuster, I was told that unless there was a leak affecting my property and the mold was caused by said leak, I had no coverage. No visit to my home, she was simply reading from the policy - why couldn't my agent see that? If he can't read my policy then how can I trust that he's advising me and keeping my best interest in mind? I should never be in a position where I am utterly homeless when I have insurance, but that's exactly the situation I'm in thanks to State Farm. I cancelled both my renters and auto policy immediately and hired a new agent. If I can't trust them not to put me out on the street, how can I trust that they'll be there for me should any future issues arise? Now I'm staying with friends until the issue is resolved, not keeping with my known lifestyle and putting me in a place that with insurance, I should never have to be. Shame on State Farm and my agent for not even trying to help and failing to ensure that I had the coverage I needed to prevent this reality. If you choose to do business here, ask a lot of questions. If he (or they) cannot answer them confidently, I suggest you go elsewhere.
