Look elsewhere before retaining the services of Kelli Bynum unless you want unjustified emotions to be the driving force in the courtroom and a lack of passion for justice to be your representation. Many may perceive my review as biased after reading it in its totality but I can assure, after a delicate review of the FACTS, I have based my conclusions from an objective standpoint. Someone I have known my entire life, who was a hardworking, well-respected person, was just sentenced to 3 years in prison following an unfortunate night of intoxication. A night, choice and temporary state that will have him paying the price the rest of his life. Who knew a night out enjoying drinks at a bar with friends would cause a permanent, lifetime, stigma?? Suffice it to say, his "friends" or lack thereof, left him to wander around the streets of five points, inebriated, and find his way back to his friends house, alone, only to end up on the doorstep of Kelli Bynum's house (coincidentally located in Riverside). If anyone has ever been intoxicated to the point of blacking out, then one would know how easy it is to lose one's mental facilities. In short, he kicked down the door after numerous attempts to make himself known and expressing his like to come inside by knocking, banging and yelling "Let me in! Let me in please" and "I'm sorry, let it go", words which several witnesses corroborated. After crawling under the door space, he proceeded to look for a bedroom, opening closet doors and bathroom doors, and looking behind A shower curtain for his friend because after all he is hammered and presumed to be in his friends house. He found a bed, removed his keys, money and phone from his pocket and climbed into bed, passing out and awoke by a swarm of police. Needless to say he was arrested and charged with Burglary, (not B&E) although his charges may have been lessened to that in the trial process bc nothing was stolen. As a criminal justice and law school student myself, what frustrates me is the way Ms. Bynum carried out her so called "justice" by testifying that she feared for her life and thought his intent was to rape and kill her. Mind you, this man is gay and has identified himself as a homosexual for several years, having 2 boyfriends, both of which have been serious relationships and is engaged to be married to one of them. Never in my years have I heard of a gay man with an inclination/desire to rape a woman?? Second, as far as the intent to kill goes, there is a term in criminal law referred to as mens rea, which is an element of proof many prosecutors try to prove in a court case, and refers to the mental state or intent to commit a crime and is as necessary as a wrongful act to establish criminal liability. Again, never in my years of living or studying criminal law have I heard of someone with the intent to kill, give up on trying to find their victim and say "Oh well, can't find them, guess I'll just go to sleep in their house." If he intended to kill Ms. Bynum, why did he not search the whole house? And find her hiding? And again, when has a killer ever made their presence so obnoxiously known?? "Honey, I'm home!!!"
-_- No. If anyone has ever been intoxicated from alcohol they would agree it is hardly likely for one to produce the gumption and planning of a homicide on a whim. May I add that no B.A.C test was administered when arrested. Consequently, due to the tenacity of the legal team which all happen to be great friends of Kelli's, saw to seeing this man pay for something that he did not intend to do and was more or less a victim of circumstance. When he is released from prison, he will be a product of the system and labeled the rest of his life, as a convicted felon, never possessing a dignified job, never being able to vote and losing out on other areas of life he will never be able to enjoy due to his label. Thus, may never amount to nothing more than a person with a criminal history and all because of one bad choice/mistake he made at 23. Way to go Kelli!
