image United States Maritime Administration (MARAD), which falls under DOT is doing harm to federal employees and military members. Their agency policies are costing us money out of our pockets and delaying the shipment of our home goods on foreign deployments. I have raised this issue through my congressional offices and the administrator at MARAD Lucinda Lessley does not seem to care.
In my personal case MARADs denial of a waiver for a US Flagged shipped caused a huge delay in the arrival of my vehicle and home goods costing my $5,000 to $6,000 out of pocket to cover those expenses. I recently deployed to Nassau Bahamas under USCBP and MARADs involvement caused my belongings to go from New Jersey, to Spain, to Portugal, to Freeport, to Miami and Finally to Nassau. Administrator Lessley does not seem to comprehend not only the delay this caused but also the additional cost. Now I am going to be taxed on the cost of the move and the agency doesn’t seem to take that into account at all. MARAD is doing a disservice to the American people and the taxpayer.
This is not part of any law either the USC states that a US flagged vessel is to be used when one is available. The “P2” requirement is an agency policy so it is the policy of MARAD and DOT to do harm to federal employee, first responders and military members for the profit of foreign owned but US flagged vessel. It is disgusting and borderline treasonous.
A CBP Preclearance employee arriving at Nassau came from Ft Lauderdale Florida. His vehicle and home goods are going to take 5-6 months because of MARADs involvement. They went by train to from Miami to the Carolinas, then to Spain, then to Freeport as the carrier MARAD insist we use does not actually come to Nassau. Then the belongings will sit in Freeport for three weeks till there is space available on the mailboat. Which will then go right back to Miami and then Nassau. Our belongings are taking two transatlantic journeys and ending up right back in Miami. Either Administrator Lessley can’t grasp this, or she just does not care about the human beings she and her agency are inflicting financial emotional pain onto.
