image I went from seasonal biologist to employed software engineer in 8 months. A friend and alum recommended it. After some research I choose it due to social mission, duration, post grad employment numbers, and it's non-profit status. I couldn't be any happier with my decision. The staff and instructors are great people. My cohort was full of great folks that helped support each other through the grueling process. It's the most challenging and also one of the most gratifying things i've ever done in my life. I've already recommended it to several friends. I'd make the same decision in a heartbeat.

image Turing School changed my life. I was working at IBM and my friend/coworker told me about Turing. I was at the time stuck in yet another dead-end job, and I was ready to start an actual career job. I attended Turing, and while I did graduate in the middle of COVID (which I hope goes without saying, isn't Turing's fault!) I did end up getting my first software job within the first year after graduation, and now I've actually begun to believe that I CAN buy a house, pay for our honeymoon, raise a family, and maybe even retire someday. Turing changed my life ^^,
Turing School's pros:
- The people: Everyone I met there was kind-hearted, and the staff were just fantastic!
- Module program/repeats: If you're not getting the material, you can repeat the mod to make sure you understand what's what! I repeated two mods, myself.
- The network: Turing's network is amazing. From the mentors to the staff, to the alumni - You have a whole world opened up to you through this network!
- They care about you as a person.
The cons:
- It's hard. Easily the hardest thing I've done in my life. Between class-time and homework I spent about 60-80 hours a week on this course. I cried fairly regularly, but I persevered!
- It's a strain on relationships - But they have resources to help you and your partner prepare!
- It's your life. because of the time investment of this school, I couldn't work. We were living off of one income at the time, which was difficult but we budgeted and made it through!
If you're serious about wanting to change your life and enter the software industry - Turing is the place to go. Just remember, you will only get out of it what you put into it. Put in your hardest effort and you will succeed!

image Software is a very difficult field to enter because you're competing with other bootcamp graduates and people who have Computer Science backgrounds. Every job in the marketplace wants 3-5 years of experience and your resume gets thrown into a pile of 400 other applicants. If you understand this, you can still succeed at Turing. They do a pretty good job of letting students know the jobs aren't going to miraculously land in your lap - you will have to work incredibly hard, excruciatingly hard, to land that sweet gig at the end.
Originally I wrote a pretty negative review of the program because I was upset about having to deal with the alt-left politics present in the curriculum. I took the review down because I decided it wasn't fair to the employees who provided so much support for me during my time there.
Looking back, my verdict now is that Turing was a pretty valuable experience - if anything, because it allowed me to become more resilient and understand that I'm much more capable than I thought I was. The only things I wish they would change are to not have politics in the program, and to teach a more marketable stack of languages (Python/Django/PHP/Kubernetes/Docker/JIRA) instead of Ruby on Rails/Knex/Node.JS since those languages aren't really used in the industry anymore.
Shout outs to Ian, Sal, Dione and Allison for being a pillar of support for me during the more challenging parts of the program. If you're thinking about applying to Turing,100% do their free try coding events, and be sure you are ready to work harder than you ever have in your life for 7-10 months. You will get out of Turing exactly what you put into it.

image I started at Turing in June 2019. Financial services had been my career up to that point but I really felt like I had maximized my learning in that setting and wanted to solve problems on a larger scale. Just like you are doing now, I looked at reviews for Turing. I was immediately blown away by the positive response. Everyone spoke about the great community, the challenges, and their success stories. For me, I was most excited about the challenge and the opportunity to develop the “grit” Jeff described at our first group meeting. Turing gives you the choice of learning back end or front end, and I wish I had dived deeper into the differences because I think I would have chosen back end given the chance again. However The front end program gave me the opportunity to focus on JavaScript which is the most popular programming language, so I couldn’t go wrong. The program is split into four 6 week modules with the first 2 probably being the most difficult since you are ramping up from scratch. The support from your teammates, mentors, and upper level students is one of the keys at Turing..:all you have to do is ask.
Things to be ready for enrolling at Turing:
1) high pressure
2) little free time
3) small amount of direction which is the Turing way..you learn how to learn
Benefits ranked in my view
1) grit
2) friendships-the Turing community truly is amazing
3) a new career that so far has given me everything I hoped for-work/life balance, great teammates, and fulfillment
Turing took my life on a completely different course, and I could not be more grateful for the community, education, and experience. Not much else to say except I highly recommend it.
