image I had probably driven 1000 times under the influence but never got caught, so I thought I was good. I got so comfortable doing this, that I started driving with my kids while I was under the influence. I drove my kids like this regularly but never considered the danger I was putting them in until I was in a horrible car accident with them in the car. Both of my kids were badly injured. Because of this I got a DUI and an open DCFS case. I came here when I was at my lowest point. No matter how badly I treated myself for what happened, the staff here were kind, compassionate, and understanding. Not once did I feel like I was being judged for what I did to myself or to my children. I learned that there is a lot more to addiction, there is actually a lot of science behind addiction but the staff here do a really good job of breaking it down. Now I realize that a lot of my childhood trauma impacted my addiction.

image I didn’t know what to expect when I got here but I just finished my 18-month program. I learned a lot being in therapy. I learned that I have a mental health issue that has added to my substance abuse problem. I learned that having a mental health issue is not the same thing as having a mental illness. I never realized how bad my substance abuse problem was until I was able to see how it impacted not only myself but my family as well. I always downplayed how bad my substance abuse problem was because I could still wake up every morning and get through the workday. I learned that I was a functioning addict and realized that I could have put the lives of so many others at risk. I endangered my partner when I was using and was charged with domestic abuse and my children saw everything. I put the lives of my children in harm’s way because I had them in the back seat while I was driving under the influence. This place created a special treatment plan for me to do parenting classes and DUI treatment at the same time. I learned a lot being in therapy, but I was able to change because I was open and willing to make the changes.

image I have lost a lot of things because of my substance addiction. I lost my husband. I lost my driver’s license. I lost my job. But what hurt most is that I lost the love of my daughter. I never realized it but my substance addiction hurt her and she followed in my footsteps in the worst way possible. After getting a handful of DUIs I still didn’t think that I needed help. I was angry at the world and I was even angrier at the staff but what I learned in treatment is that I was really angry at myself. No matter how rude I became, the staff here remained respectful. Even when I wanted to give up, I was pushed by Ms. K to keep going and to not give up. After being there for a while, I noticed the compassion and the consideration that they had for me and everyone else being treated there. Because I wanted to change, I have been able to get my life back on track and have started to reconnect with my daughter. I can never fully express the gratitude for the level of expertise and compassion that the staff here have.

image After receiving my second DUI, I picked up a DCFS case because I was neglecting my kids for my substance use problems. This place was amazing, all the staff were non-judgmental. I was allowed me to do two programs at the same time, one for my DUI and the other for my DCFS case. A few months into my DCFS program, I was allowed to get my kids back. I really appreciated the support I received from Ms. K and Ms. G, they truly do the lord's work. This place really helped change my life for the better. As a single father, it's nice to be completely sober so that I can be present for my children.

image My son, who struggled with addiction, received his second DUI and needed some real help. This is an amazing place. Staff are highly educated and well trained. This place worked with my son's schedule and his disability. This place is ADA friendly. My son's court paperwork was expired and they got in contact with the court for us and renewed it for us. This place is the real deal if you want help and you are ready for change. If you aren't ready to get better, this might not be the place for you. This is a mental health treatment facility not just DUI treatment.
