image I went to Hollywood Monument in Union yesterday to inquire about having my parents headstone engraved. As soon as I enter, an older woman at the desk looks at me as if Im going to rob the place. She leans back in her chair (visibly terrified) and asked can I help you? I say I need my parents headstone engraved she interrupts and says....first, what cemetery are they located in? I said its in Bloomfield, but the name escapes me at the moment. She says If its Fairmount, we dont go there because its too dangerous. Keep in mind that Fairmount is in Newark, not Bloomfield. Then I said the name is Glendale Cemetery. She said ooooooh ok we can go there. I said on second thought, I dont need your services and I leave. Im definitely not one one to play the race card, but I am totally convinced that I received this treatment because I am non-white. I MAY be wrong but nevertheless she was extremely rude and doesnt deserve my business or yours.

image Heartbreaking service. I had to leave a message and the next day received a call back from Helen. I started to explain that I recently lost my Mom and I needed to get her name added to an existing stone. Helen rudely interrupted me with a, "what's her name?" Not even an "I'm so sorry for your loss..." I was trying to explain that I wasn't going to just add her name but was wanting to get pricing to add some detail to her stone and..... (interrupt again) "what's herrrrr nameeeee?" I asked Helen "why are you being so nasty to me?" Helen was quick and very defensive in her reply, I am NOT BEING NASTY!" Helen, maybe you didn't realize you were being nasty because you have been doing this every day. This is the first time I ever had to call and order an inscription for my mother's headstone and it was  very hard process for me. I was not only going to add her name and some detail to her stone but was going to order a large family stone for my husband and I for pre-planning purpose. Your lack of compassion and empathy was extremely hurtful. You do realize the nature of your business captures people at extremely raw emotional stages of  life? Perhaps, before calling someone back or picking up that phone you take a breath and count your blessings. A little empathy in this world goes a long way. You might need some yourself one day.

image I negotiated for 5 months to get my grandmother's name added to my grandfather's marker.  The cemetery only allows one marker per two graves.  My grandmother had used a military marker for my grandfather, so she was anonymous.  The cemetery buries one below the other. The name plate was very expensive and there were many calls and a lot of snail mail back and forth, they don't have Internet or email.  Every time I got a letter my name or address was wrong, they probably use the original typewriter ever made.  In the end I am relieved my grandmother's grave now has a marker.  :). I am pretty sure this company did my great grandfather's marker too, back in 1965, they did a nice job with his marker.
