image First off I would like to say that I feel as though I was mistreated for the fact that I am a young woman with 2 children and an old machine, not an older woman with the newest equipment.
When I brought my irreparable serger home from J&H, my husband and I decided we would take the time to see if we could repair my serger ourselves.
We started by removing the needle plate and noticed that there was a screw hole without the screw in it. When we tipped the machine we heard a rattling sound, so we removed the bottom cover and inside was a tiny screw and the broken off stitch finger.
We reattached the broken piece with the screw. (See photos)
The machine still didnt work properly. So we searched some forums and saw someone having the same problem. After reading one of the comments we made a few adjustments and SUCCESS! My serger now works again!
I would like to note that I am not against small businesses. I love small businesses and they are vital to our small town. I would have been happy to pay the $275 dollars to have my machine repaired by a professional, but J&H literally did not even attempt to repair my machine. If they had they would have seen the broken piece. They also would have seen that one of the needles was not properly catching the thread as they moved down.
I am literally only posting this review to show that the machine wasnt irreparable. And the comment on the previous review was unwarranted and unprofessional. Hopefully you treat other customers with more respect and diligence in the future.

Glad you found the stitch finger & screw, usually the parts are broken/damaged and not found. Still, the parts you needed for your machine are no longer available. And you still have adjustments that should be made to your machine so that you do not break another lower looper, upper looper, or more damage to your machine. We only have to open the looper door to see the adjustments that will keep your machine working properly. When the stitch finger was noticed, we immediately tried to source a replacement and found out that it was no longer available. We did not proceed any further with the estimate, and contacted you to let you know that the needed parts for your machine were no longer available.

image My wife dropped off her serger to be serviced. Her machine functioned and made a chain but wouldnt work properly when she ran fabric through it. She wanted that repaired, and an overall service.
When my wife dropped her serger off Hellen tried forcing the front cover open, my wife stopped her and showed her how to open it gently. She almost left then but really wanted her serger repaired for a project she already had material cut out for.
Hellen called her a couple days later and told her that her needle plate was missing, even though it was on the machine when she dropped it off. She told my wife that the machine would never run properly without it and that it cant be ordered because its irreplaceable. Hellen then proceeded to tell her that even if they did have her needle plate it would still cost $275 for additional repairs.
This is the second time we have taken machines here and both times they pretty much told us it wasnt worth fixing, but they were all too happy to to tell us that they did however have new machines we could buy.
What a scam. Dont waste your time!

To date, we have never had to defend our business, however, this review deserves some clarification. Helen is the co-owner of J&H, and has been working with customers machines since the 1980's. During the intake, she did notice that the looper cover door was difficult to open and asked your wife to open it for her. Your wife explained to Helen that she had ordered a looper, installed it, and had sewn a few items with her machine. Your machine was checked by our tech right away to estimate the repair and see if any parts were needed so that we could get your authorization approved for the repair and get the parts on the way. During the estimate process, it was noted that the looper was not installed correctly, that many other adjustments were needed to prevent further damage to your machine, and your stitch finger was missing (broken off of the needle plate). The stitch finger is an integral part of the stitch forming mechanism and your serger will not sew without it. When your wife came to pick up the machine she told Helen that the needle plate was on her machine, Helen said yes and then showed your wife the part that was "missing" (broken off of your needle plate). You stated then that you thought Helen said your needle plate was missing. We offer FREE estimates upon request. As a rule, if we find that your machine needs a part that is no longer available, we will stop the repair, contact you to let you know what we found, and you could then pick up your machine without any charge to you for any work done. If your machines need integral parts that are NO LONGER AVAILABLE, that is your machines manufacturer's fault. We had 4+ of our knowledgeable staff working on helping you with your machines. We were also honest with you about your machines and their condition... for FREE! We are always happy to show/explain the problems we've found with your machines. We all take offense to your claim that our business is a scam, and your one star review. Our business model is to help you with your machine, btw. We also take offense to your statement: "they were all too happy to tell us that they did however have new machines we could buy". If your machine is not repairable??? Wouldn't you want us to give you other alternatives??? Rarely do we have machines that need parts that are no longer available or have so many problems that it makes it not worth repairing. Our repairs are significantly less than any other sewing machine businesses in Alaska, and we have a less than 1% repair return ratio. All of our repairs come with warranties. If your machine can't be fixed for whatever reason... YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED! In closing, the person that wrote this one star review... wasn't even there! We will continue to offer stellar service with our VERY knowledgeable staff because... "Service is Our Business!"
