If your looking for an urgent care that will treat you with respect and kindness and actually help you this is it. From the moment I stepped in I knew I would be treated well. I didn't even have to wait that long. And the doctor and nurse who attended to me were so nice. Overall it was a pleasant experience and this will definitely be the urgent care i will go to in the future.

On Wednesday, 2/27/2019, I took my two boys, 9 and 7 to a routine annual checkup with Dr. Mandel. Unbeknownst to me, Dr. Mandel read on the boys' chart, a note written by another doctor about a 5 year old CPS incident. She has never read the actual CPS report, because the case was long closed. She only read this 2nd-hand note from another doctor who got it from another indirect source.
- Instead of asking me, the boys' mother, about the CPS incident first, Dr. Mandel began interrogating the boys, who have had minimum prior interactions and no basis of trust with her.
- When I intervened and asked why she's interrogating the boys, she ignored me and told me she was "just doing her job" and continued.
- Dr. Mandel then proceeded to interrogate the boys about their birth father (I'm re-married, and the boys have no current relationship with the birth father), and when I asked her to stop, she continued to bully me and saying she was "just doing her job"
- Dr. Mandel then questioned why the boys are home schooled, and keep in mind she has met the boys for less than 10 minutes, and this line of questioning was way beyond necessary or appropriate. She is not an educational professional, and she has zero basis to evaluate if home schooling is the right approach for these boys.
- Dr. Mandel brought up how she has experience dealing with poor black people, which further insulted me because I may be black, but I'm definitely not poor, so why tell me this?
- The worst of it is, Dr. Mandel is not a stranger to us. We've been coming to her for the last 7 months with my new baby (since he was 3 days old), and we have been extremely transparent and forthcoming with her. She has enough context to understand us and our family, or at least afford me with the minimum respect as the mother.
The whole incident was very traumatizing for me and the boys. From the start, she assumed, without any evidence other than a secondary note, that the boys are being abused and disrespected me as a mother and human being. She approached a sensitive subject with a sledgehammer, and made me extremely upset. When I confronted her, she began crying and saying how it was uncomfortable for *her*.
Dr. Mandel shows poor judgement and lack of sensitivity necessary to be a pediatrician. Furthermore, she demonstrated an inability to evaluate information in their totality and allowed her implicit biases to govern her actions with her patients. When my husband wrote an email to her about this incident, she refused to acknowledge that she has any biases with a version of the "I treated many black people, so I can't be biased" defense. Dr. Mandel is also not a trained child psychologist, nor is she an educator, and she did not establish the necessary trust and context to evaluate me and my boys on these dimensions, yet she persistently tried to. And most hurtfully, she disrespected me as a mother, after we had months of good prior interactions.
From this incident, I strongly believe Dr. Mandel is patently unfit to be a pediatrician in the State of California.
