Ocala, Florida is located in Marion County and is the county seat. The population of Ocala is over 53,000 residents. The city was established in 1846 by founder Matthew Hall near the site of a military outpost during the Seminole Wars. The name Ocala comes from "Ocali" which the translation means "Big Hammock."
The economic development of Ocala was encouraged by the rail service that reached the city in 1881. The town was built up and then destroyed two years later by fire. When the city began to rebuild they used brick, steel, and granite instead of lumber leading to the nickname "The Brick City."
The city thrives on tourism with its attractions like Wild Waters water park and Silver Springs Nature Theme Park. Ocala was also awarded the All-American City Award in 1995. Ocala, Florida is located approximately 70 miles from Disney World.
Ocala and Marion County is known as the horse capital of the world. The first horse farm in Florida was established in 1943 for thoroughbreds. In 1956, Needles, a thoroughbred from the Ocala area became the winner of the Kentucky Derby and establishing him as the first Florida-bred horse to win. In 1978 Affirmed, who raced out of Marion County, won the Triple Crown establishing the area as the horse capital of the world. The city is granted the privilege under the Chamber of Commerce guidelines to be one of five cities in the world that can refer to this title.
